Far From Home
The Doobie Brothers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I wish you could have stayed a little longer cause it seems like only yesterday
You've gotten so much stronger now I know you're on your way
We've waited for this moment now it's hard to let you go
Cause baby when you're gone away I know I'm gonna miss you so

Spread your wings and fly away
When the rain begins to fall
Just remember that you'll never be that far from home

I looked in your room today I saw an old and worn out shoe
It's one from your favorite pair. I remember when they were new
You used to wear them everywhere when you used to hold my hand
Time slips through your fingers just like a tiny little grain of sand

Baby just spread your wings and fly away
When the rain begins to fall
Just remember that you'll never be that far from home

Just remember that you'll never be that far from home
Just remember that you'll never be that far from home
Just remember that you'll never be that far from home

Spread your wings and fly away

Spread your wings and fly away
Spread your wings and fly away

Overall Meaning

The Doobie Brothers' song "Far from Home" tells the story of a parent or loved one who is bidding farewell to a child or loved one who is setting out on a new journey. The lyrics suggest that the person leaving has grown and become stronger, and the singer acknowledges that it will be hard to let go. However, the chorus reassures the person leaving that they will never be far from home, even when things get tough.

The song uses several metaphors to convey its message. The line "spread your wings and fly away" suggests that the person leaving is like a bird leaving the nest, taking flight and moving on to new things. The image of the "rain" that begins to fall suggests that there will be challenges and obstacles to overcome, but that the person leaving should remember that they are never far from home, even when facing difficult times.

Overall, "Far from Home" is a touching and emotional song about the universal experience of saying goodbye to a loved one who is moving on to new things. The lyrics are filled with nostalgia, as the singer reflects on memories of the past, and also with hope, as they look forward to the future.

I was fortunate enough to go to a Doobie Brothers concert and I have to admit.. they are the best band to play live; they sound absolutely amazing. When they played this song, there wasn't a person in the room who left untouched by this song. They are extremely talented and John McFee has such passion in the violin

Not sure how the rest of you feel, but my eyes are watering.  What a special song.  Bless you Pat and Doobie Brothers.  An eternal song.

outstanding. One of the most touching and personal songs I have ever heard. Pat broke the mold on this one. I'm 52 and grew up with the doobie bros, they always captivated me with their songs, but this one truly makes me feel just how much we've grown up together. This will go down as one of the most defining songs of my life. Great job Pat...great job...truly beatifull....

holy hell. what an amazing song. I grew up on the doobies and it's not the they just haven't lost a single step, they are more amazing than ever. I'm 52 and remember when I was 9 and my Dad came home from Nam. I have 4 kids...and I've seen my son come home from war and watched his kids jump into his dads arms like I did. And burned into my memory is the buzz light year shoes I bought my second son and how he wore them out. Kids are beautiful. So is life.

One of the saddest parts is you, Patrick, eating alone in the hotel room. It really must be like that. Remember when you played Lake Geneva and we scouted places to see if you could catch a bite after the concert? But therre's lots more joyful stuff. You are so blessed! Love and hugs, Carolyn<3

This is one of my new favorites of the Doobie Bros. It really touches home with me since my only daughter is leaving for college in a few months, but it's a beautiful song. Writing, singing, music are all superb! This is a great Pat Simmons song :) So glad to hear that the Doobie Bros are still producing fantastic music! Just saw them perform this live about a week ago, and it was a fantastic show as always! Keep rocking Doobies!
