How much simpler do you think that the first cell was than modern cells? It had to be simple enough to come alive but complicated enough to break down nutrients and reproduce. It would be amazing to watch the first living cell be thrown together, become alive, absorb nutrients, and create a copy of itself. And did it really happen without an intelligence guiding it? Or did an advanced civilization create the first living cell? Will we do it one billion years from now after we know a lot more about how it happened? Only time will tell.

I always assumed this is how life started, but the probability of this event is so microscopic as to be impossible! Just imagine that a viable cell needed 52 components to be able to reproduce... well, we know that the odds of shuffling 52 components (or playing cards) into a particular order is 1 in 8*10^67 or something like that. So presumably it would have to happen more than once so the odds are less than one:(number of atoms in the known universe). Can someone please tell me how that is possible?

It's funny. I'm agnostic, but when the science of it is explained it demonstrates just how unbelievable it would be that it happened coincidentally. If for no other reason than because it probably had to happen a few thousand times before it existed long enough to replicate before being destroyed.

The video pretty much explained nothing. The way I see it, biochemistry is just chemistry. One chemical reacts to another within the laws of the universe. You can sort of explain how the first single cell organism came to be with this way, but there is still a couple giant holes in this theory. First, how is a single cell organism programmed through it's genome know to replicate and mutate? And second, scientists can't replicate the creation of a single cell organism without using a pre existing cell. It is the biggest hole in the scientific world, and leaves room for a god. It doesn't mean there is one, but until we can replicate the creation of a single cell organism from nothing but matter, a god sparking life can't be ruled out.

If anyone is wondering, this isn’t “the” answer to what the first organism was. There is a much more probable explanation. I’m not saying that this theory is impossible to occur, it is, except it is much more likely for this other explanation to be the cause. It involves hydrothermal vents, chance, and millions of years of retries. Reply to my comment asking for an in-depth explanation if you are interested. But if nobody sees this I won’t bother. Anyways, the most likely event that occurred causing the first organism to appear was the collection of specific chemicals necessary for life being spewed out of hydrothermal vents. These chemicals would come together and create the first organism. The odds of this happening are like winning the lottery, but you need to remember, these hydrothermal vents would be spewing out this chemical soup for millions of years. Assuming the conditions around the vents remained relatively constant throughout those millions of years, there would eventually be success in forming the first organism. However, the first organism that would have formed through this method would have died. Let me explain why.
The organisms that are formed through this process would be very simple in structure. They were literally randomly generated after all, and not the product of evolution. Many of the organisms formed this way, would be too simple, and die almost immediately.
I have thought of 3 “requirements” that these newly formed organisms need to meet. The first requirement for these organisms is that they must be able to survive their environment, meaning they can withstand the conditions around them and also give themselves energy.
The second requirement is the ability to reproduce. I mean, surviving means nothing if they are going to die without making offspring anyway right? The method of reproduction doesn’t matter, they just need to be able to be able to pass on their genetic material.
The third requirement is evolution. They need to be able to adapt and change according to their environment. What good is reproducing and making a large population if a sudden change in the temperature of the environment is going to wipe them all out?

i don't think there's life anywhere else. at least, not intelligent life. the probability of just one living thing being formed was miniscule, and the probability of it happening again on a different planet around the same time as us, in 14 billion years is absolutely tiny, and the chance of that species either being too primitive to communicate with or already extinct is so high.
but then again, if the odds are in our favour, there could be a few civilizations out there. if they're really in our favour, there could be a girl, relatively similar to a human girl, on a planet billions of light years away, lying in bed right now, wondering whethere there's any life similar to hers out in that massive, black void.

Calm down, we're only talking about theories about the rise of mankind. Both the Genesis version and the one in the video seem implausible to me, but the latter seems far more likely. Also, the biggest difference between them is that if new evidence points to a different scientific theory, then the scientific theory will change to fit - unlike yours which is immune to contrary evidence.

Okay so if I showed you a palace in the middle of no where, in a desert and i said that this came by itself. Would you believe me? If i said that over time the wind shifted the rocks together and blew the rocks on to each other and slowly it formed into a palace over time. But if someone said that the explanation of this palace is that there exist an all powerful wizard outside time and space that wants us to pray to him according to a book written 2000 years ago by humans then I would find it quite random.

But if I had observed that other small houses had been formed by wind blowing on stones, the explanation of wind blowing on rocks would have been something to consider. As I can make experiments on the smaller examples and gain an understanding about it.

Many of the molecules we previously thought only could be found in life, we have managed to recreate by natural phenomenon.

Many people seem to misunderstand science. Science doesn't disprove God and religion, it just says that it is irrelevant and uninteresting, because God is defined as something we can't observe and interact with, but science is all about observing, interacting and making objective models regarding them.

I want to point out that the narrator says "no one really knows how life started". So he is saying that our scientific understanding on the possible origins of unicellular life is speculation. So to those who keep going "this is ridiculous, science doesn't have all the answers", I want to point out that our human understanding of science doesn't claim to know all the answers. But I also want point out that your holy books who claim to have the answers, are doing so with extraordinary claims that lack extraordinary evidence.

On the side of science, "primordial soup" does occur in nature naturally and it can be made in a lab. It is simply a mixture of compounds that spark life. And scientists have indeed recreated the possible conditions of early earth and they saw the emergence of these compounds. So its possible that life started this way in the oceans. But as I stated before, the narrator says " no really one knows for certain".

You do realize that looking at this video and seeing how "coinsidental" it would have to be for all the parts of DNA to find each other and come to life is basically a miracle. As a matter of fact, to me this video is full of theories and no facts. To me the big bang and the forming of universe and life itself had to have a law and the law must have a law giver. A single celled organism is just as much as complex as any other organism. No way that it could create itself.

This is so confusing and contradictive, since what we know the new theory of the origin of living thing denies the abiogenesis one and proofing that it is not true, and this is exactly explain that, the abiogenesis (generatio spontanea)—basically explain that living things come from ancient soup of molecules. The new and accepted theory is biogenesis one, explaining that living things come from other living things. And everywhere i found the explanation of first creatures, it's always this. It's like science are contradictive themselves, i can't.

I was going to make a big long comment about the reliability of biblical manuscripts, but then I realized I was kind of getting away from the point. I saved it if you want to read the result of my research and knowledge (as a scholar of ancient Greek and Latin). I can soundly tell you that translations of the bible are as accurate as can be to the translated text, which itself never deviates much from 1st century AD to today.

Im not doubting that way back when there was indeed a dude called Jesus, but given the amount of re-writes and then translations of the bible, and not forgetting of course EVERYONE'S need to lie and embellish when story telling, it would seem to me to be astronomically naive and idiotic to believe the "good book" as any kind of truth.
