Curly: When I take you out tonight with me
Honey, here's the way it's goin' to be
You will set behind a team of snow-white horses
In the slickest gig you ever see!
Aunt Eller: (spoken) Lands!
Curly: Chicks and ducks and geese beter scurry
When I take you out in the surrey
When I take you out in the surrey with the fringe on top!
Watch thet fringe and see how it flutters
When I drive them high-steppin' strutters
Nosey pokes'll peek through their shutters and their eyes will pop!
The wheels are yeller,
The upholstery's brown, the dashboard's genuine leather
WIth i sin-glass curtains y'can roll right
Down, in case there's a change in the weather
Two bright side lights winkin' and blinkin'
Ain't no finer rig, I'm a thinkin'
You c'n keep yer rig if you're thinkin' 'at keer to swop
Fer that shiny little surrey with the fringe on the top!
Aunt Eller: Would y' say the fringe was made of silk?
Curly: Wouldn't have no other kind but silk
Laurey: Has it really got a team of snow-white horses?
Curly: One's like snow, the other's more like milk
All the world'll fly in a flurry
When I take yout out in the surrey
When I take you out in the surrey with the fringe on top!
When we hit that road, hell fer leather
Cats and dogs'll dance in the heather
Birds and frogs'll sing all together and the toads will hop!
The wind'll whistle as we rattle along
The cows'll moo in the clover
The river will ripple out a whispered song
And whisper it over and over
Don'y you wisht y'd go on ferever?
Don't you whisht y'd go on ferever?
Don"t you wisht y'd go on ferever and ud never stop
In that shiny litle surrey with fringe on the top
Aunt Eller:
(Spoken) Y'd shore feel like a queen settin' up in that carriage.
Curly: (spoken) On'y she talked so mean to me a while
Back, Aunt Eller, that I'm in good mind not to take her!
Laurey: (spoken) Ain't said I was going!
Curly: (spoken) I ain't ast you!
Laurey: (spoken) Where'd you get such a rig at?
(Laughs) I bet he went and hired a rig
Over to Claremore! Thinking I'd go with him!
Curly: 'S all you know about it.
Laurey: Spent all his money h'arin' a
Rig, and now ain't got nobody to ride in it!
Curly: Have too!... Did not h'ar it.
Made the whole thing up outa my head.
Laurey: What? Made it up?
Curly: Dashboard and all.
Laurey: Oh! Git offa the place you! Aunt Eller,
Make him git hissef outa here! Tellin' me lies!
Curly: Makin' up a few'-- look out now!
Makin' up a few purties ain't agin no law 'at I know of.
Don't you wish they WAS such a rig, though.
Nen y'could go to the play party and dance a hoe-down till mornin' if
You was mind to... Nen when you was all wore out,
I'd lift you onto the surrey,
And jump up alongside of you- and we'd jist
Point the horses home... I can picture the whole thing
Curly: (sings) I can see the stars gittin' blurry
When we ride back home in the surrey
Ridin' slowly home in the surrey with the fringe on top
I can feel the day gittin' older,
Feel a sleepy head near my shoulder,
Noddin', Droppin', close to my shoulder till it falls, kerplop!
The sun is swimmin' on the rim of a hill
The moon is takin' a header
And jist as I'm thinkin' all the earth is still
A lark'll wake up in the medder...
Hush! You bird, my baby's a-sleepin'
Maybe got a dream worth a-keepin'

Whoa! You team, and jist keep a creepin' at a slow clip-clop
Don't you hurry with the surrey with the fringe on the top

Overall Meaning

The Esther Williams Trio's song "Surrey with the Fringe on Top" is a playful and delightful duet (later trio) between Curly, Aunt Eller, and Laurey. The song's lyrics describe a surrey ride that Curly has planned for Laurey, including the snowy-white horse team, the yeller wheels, the brown upholstery, and the silk fringe. Curly's goal is to impress Laurey and enjoy a long, peaceful ride with her under the stars. Aunt Eller is intrigued by the rig and asks about it, and Laurey initially resists Curly's efforts to persuade her to go on the ride. However, by the end of the song, Curly has managed to convince Laurey to go, allowing him to enjoy a romantic, leisurely night under the stars with her.

The song's playful lyrics, bouncy melody, and upbeat tempo make it an excellent choice for a musical or a sing-along. The tune is designed to be catchy, and its melody sticks in your head long after it's over. The song provides insight into the characters' personalities and motivations, allowing viewers to understand their loves and fears.

@anthonyglee1710

I can’t understand why Ellen is so popular. She gives me the creeps.

@lisawentworth6831

she used to be self-effacing and wonderfully awkward. Now she pulls mean stunts....isn't that what schoolyard bullies do?

@lisawentworth6831

@Youtubers fan And dj too You don't think what in 2021? The topic was why is Ellen so popular, when she gives some the creeps. Justin Beiber and stuff like that was much later. She used to have a sitcom where they was beloved. Then she came out ,dropped off the radar for a while, but came back due to her niceness. What a lot of us are saying is that she is not that nice; her whole playing pranks is a schoolyard bully tactic, and not what nice people do.

@vmm5163

I used to love Ellen in her sitcom, she was very smiley and likable. But she turned into a horrible person
