About You
The Farmers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Seems that I read, or somebody said
That out of sight is out of mind
Maybe that's so but I tried to go
And leave you behind, what did I find...

I took a trip on the train
And I thought about you,
I passed a shadowy lane
And I thought about you,

Two or three cars parked under the stars
A winding stream
Moon shining down on some little town
And with each beam, same old dream

At every stop that we made
Oh, I thought about you
But when I pulled down the shade
Then I really felt blue,

I peeked through the crack
And looked at the track
The one going back to you

And what did I do
I thought about you

Overall Meaning

The Farmer's "About You" is a song about the difficulty of moving on from someone you once loved. The opening lyrics set up the theme, with a reference to the saying “out of sight is out of mind.” The singer acknowledges that he tried to leave the person behind, but found that it was not so easy.

The chorus describes a train ride taken by the singer. As he passes various scenery, he can't help but think about the person he has left behind. Even though he's physically removed from the situation, his thoughts are still consumed by the memories of this person. The use of the phrase “thought about you” throughout the chorus emphasizes just how present this person still is in the singer's mind.

The final verse reveals the depth of the singer's feelings. He can't resist looking back at the train tracks that will ultimately lead him home to the person he's left. Despite trying to move on, it's clear that his heart still belongs to this other person. The line, “and what did I do, I thought about you,” sums up the entire song. No matter how much the singer tries to forget, the memories of this person are still very much a part of him.
