It was formed with the original name of Sentimental Four in Newport News, Virginia, U.S., in the late 1940s, and initially consisted of two sets of brothers - Rudy West (born 25 July 1932, Newport News, Virginia) and Bernie West (born 4 February 1930, Newport News), and Ripley Ingram (born 1930 - died 23 March 1995, Newport News) and Raphael Ingram. Ingram left in 1949 and Maryland Pierce (born 1933) and Dickie Smith became members in his place. At this juncture the name of the group was changed to The Five Keys.
They were signed to Aladdin Records in 1951, and in 1952 Rudy West left to join the United States Army, and he was replaced by Ulysses K. Hicks. In 1954 Dickie Smith left and was replaced with Ramon Loper.
At this point the Five Keys was signed to Capitol Records, and their popularity increased, although more instrumentation was used.
The group was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2002.

I'll always be in love with you
And though you'll find more bliss in someone else's kiss
I'll always be in love with you.
I can't do any more I've tried so hard to please
But let me thank you for such tender memories
I wish you happiness as for me sweetheart
(I'll always be in love with you)
The lyrics to The Five's song "I'll Be In Scotland After You" express the depth of unconditional love that one person has for the other. The first verse contemplates the possibility of the other person straying and finding happiness elsewhere, but still promises to remain in love with them always. The second verse expresses exhaustion from trying to please the other person, but still wishes them happiness and acknowledges that their own love is unchanging. The repeated line of "I'll always be in love with you" reinforces the permanent and enduring nature of their love, even if they are physically apart.
The song captures the relatable theme of unrequited love, where one person loves another who may not feel the same. The lyrics express a sense of acceptance, but also highlight the bittersweet feelings of never being able to fully move on. The use of the word "sweetheart" throughout the song adds a personal and endearing touch, emphasizing the emotional connection being expressed.
Overall, "I'll Be In Scotland After You" is a poignant and timeless love song that captures the complexities of love and the beauty of devotion.
