Tell It Like It Is
The Flames Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If you want
Something to play with
Go and find yourself a toy
Baby, my time
Is too expensive
And I am not
A little boy
If you are serious
Don't play with my heart, it makes me furious
But if you want me
To love you
Now baby, I will
Girl, you know that I will

Tell it like it is
Don't be ashamed
To let your conscience be your guide
But I know
Deep down inside of me
I believe you love me
Forget your foolish pride

Life is too short to have sorrows
You may be here today, but gone tomorrow
You might as well give me what I want
So go on and leave
Baby, go on and leave

Tell it like it is
I am nothing to play with
Go and find yourself a toy
But tell it like it is
My time is too expensive
And I am not a little boy

I'm just telling you like it is

Overall Meaning

In The Flames' song "Tell it like it is," the singer is putting his foot down about his worth in a relationship. He tells his partner that if they are simply looking for someone to play with, they should go find a toy. He explains that his time and emotions are valuable and he won't be treated like a little boy. The singer also warns his lover not to play with his heart or it will make him angry. However, if they truly love him, he will reciprocate those feelings. The chorus of the song encourages the partner to be honest with their feelings and to not let foolish pride get in the way of embracing love.

The lyrics of "Tell it like it is" send a strong message about the importance of valuing oneself in a relationship. The singer refuses to be treated as a dispensable object and demands that his partner acknowledge his worth. This sentiment can apply to any type of relationship- romantic, platonic, or professional. It's essential to recognize your own value and not settle for being mistreated by others. Moreover, the song stresses the importance of honest and genuine communication in relationships. It suggests that disregarding one's pride and being truthful with one's feelings can result in more sincere and fulfilling connections.

My late dad loved this. My mom played this today, Christmas 2018. It was very emotional. He was a talented guitarist. RIP Trevor Rodger Whitford

One of the great travesties of the rock era - the Flames should have been a worldwide success but were denied it by politics and an unfortunate geographic location. Their music sounds as good today as it did 50 years ago!

I was personal friends, indeed that close that had I my passport at the time I would have gone overseas with them. I was particularly close to brother and am still in regular contact with Blondie. The sadness of South Africa's past apardheid era. They were not allowed to be played p on the whiteys radio station. Their songs For your precious love however could not be stopped and topped the charts 😊
