You're just in love
The Fontane Sisters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I hear singing and there's no one there
I smell blossoms and the trees are bare
All day long I seem to walk on air
I wonder why, I wonder why
I keep tossing in my sleep at night
And what's more I've lost my appetite
Stars that used to twinkle in the skies
Are twinkling in my eyes I wonder why

(You don't need analyzing)
(It is not so surprising)
(That you feel very strange but nice)
(Your heart goes pitter patter)
(I know just what's the matter)
(Because I've been there once or twice)
(Put your head on my shoulder)
(You need someone who's older)
(A rub down with a velvet glove)
(There is nothing you can take)
(To relieve that pleasant ache)
(You're not sick, you're just in love)

I hear singing and there's no one there
(You don't need analyzing)
(It is not so surprising)
I smell blossoms and the trees are bare
(That you feel very strange but nice)
All day long I seem to walk on air
(Your heart goes pitter patter)
(I know just what's the matter)
I wonder why
(Because I've been there once or twice)
I wonder why

I keep tossing in my sleep at night
(With your head on my shoulder)
(You need someone who's older)
And what's more I've lost my appetite
(A rub down with a velvet glove)
Stars that used to twinkle in the skies
(There is nothing you can take)
(To relieve that pleasant ache)
Are twinkling in my eyes
(You're not sick)
I wonder why
(You're just in love)

(And I know why)

And I know why
I'm just in love

Overall Meaning

The Fontane Sisters' song "You're Just in Love" speaks about the euphoric, dreamlike sensation that love can bring. The lyrics represent the dizzying feeling of infatuation that can make a person feel like they are floating on air. The opening lines describe sensing flowers blooming despite the trees being bare and hearing singing with no one present. This imagery highlights the disorientation that accompanies strong emotions. The lyrics also touch upon losing sleep and appetite over love, a common side effect of being utterly consumed.

The chorus is a soothing acknowledgment of those feelings, indicating that these sensations are natural and not indicative of an illness. The song's advice is to lean into those feelings, to bask in the thrills of love. The final lines indicate that the singer understands the sensation of feeling "just in love."

@CrystalDreamsWorld

So sad not many people know this type of music! A classic! We still play it in our Crystal shop in Montreal. :D

@ricricvinyl2401

My late father was known as the Perry Como in our place. His voice is 100% the same as Perry Como's. I missed my Dad.

my dad looked a tad like elvis.

@SoundofSilence492

My dad couldn’t carry a tune in a bushel basket LOL, but he was a musician and a big fan of Perry Como. I was born around the time this was popular, so this song spun around for a few years as I remembered enough of the lyrics to find it. I think my mom used to sing it, she was a singer and also a musician. Fun days back then.

Can't get this tune out of my head.

@southernbiscuits1275

Of course, this is an amazing song. But, I remember listening to it with my mom and hearing it is like being with her again. She's been gone for over forty-five years now. Yet, she's right there with me when I hear this song. What a gift Irving Berlin gave the world with his music!
