Original vocalist Clem Curtis left in 1968 and moved to the U.S. for a solo career on the club circuit, encouraged by the likes of Wilson Pickett and Sam & Dave, playing Las Vegas with The Righteous Brothers. He was replaced by Colin Young.
The group's final hit was the less pop-oriented, more sophisticated Born To Live and Born To Die. They split in 1970, when the rhythm section broke away to form the progressive group Pluto. When Curtis returned to the UK he formed a new version of the group with little success on record, but a lucrative spell on the 1960s nostalgia circuit.
Baby I Couldn't See
The Foundations Lyrics

If time was running out
Couldn't love you more
Oh, right now, baby
Take me by the hand, come on
Be my darling be the one
I wouldn′t want to lay or ever love with another
If everyone in the world
I wouldn't want for more than I have
I couldn't love you more if I tried
I couldn′t love you more, boy,
I couldn′t love you more, boy
'Cause darling, I′m on your side
I really am on your side
My love I'm on your side
Oh, right now, baby
I couldn′t love you more, boy
Stay exactly how you are
I couldn't love you more, boy
Couldn′t love you more
I couldn't love you more, boy
Stay exactly how you are
I couldn't love you more, boy
Couldn′t love you more
If everyone in the world
Would give me their treasure
I would not want for more
Than I have, right now
The Foundations song "Baby I Couldn't See" talks about a person's deep love for their partner that cannot be quantified or enhanced, no matter what happens in the world. The song starts with a statement of how the person's love for their partner knows no bounds and is insurmountable, even if time was running out. They express that they wouldn't want to lay with or love anyone else, indicating their commitment to their partner.
Further in the song, the singer explicitly states that they are completely on their partner's side and that they love them unconditionally. They ask their partner to be their darling and state that they couldn't love them more if they tried. The final verse expresses that even if the world gave the singer everything they wanted materialistically, their love for their partner would still be the most valuable thing to them.
This song exemplifies a dedicated and unconditional love for someone, regardless of circumstances. It speaks to the notion that true love is not something that can be heightened or bettered, but rather appreciated and treasured for its inherent value.

Shame it was the beginning of the decline as you pointed out. This was a great song that deserved success.

That's rather harsh - loved the Foundations - the record-buying public were just too fickle, and fame is, for most, ephemeral

I heard this song at the roller rink a few times, I don't remember it from the radio though. Outstanding group, should be more famous.

Decline, certainly not, it is a brilliant song. I remember it was a personal number one at my place in 1970. Struggeling for the number one spot with Edison lighthouse and Simon and Garfunkel..
