After the lack of success in the record sales department, The Four Lovers temporarily disbanded until 1958, after Valli met producer Bob Crewe, who signed him (and the group) to a three year artist contract. The reconstituted quartet then worked steadily as session artists, primarily as background singers and performers, in addition to resuming their live performances in various clubs and lounges between New York City and Philadelphia) In addition, their contract with Crewe allowed them to record individually or collectively for Crewe's Peri Records — which they did under more than a handful of "stage names".
After changes in personnel in 1959 and 1960 brought in composer/keyboardist Bob Gaudio and bassist Nick Massi, the group had become a complete outfit with an "in house" composer. In mid-1961, after a failed audition at a New Jersey bowling establishment, a handshake between Valli and Gaudio signified a change: The Four Seasons Partnership was founded, and by the end of 1962, the quartet of Valli, Gaudio, Massi, and DeVito (with Crewe and arranger Charles Calello, a former member of The Four Lovers) would have two singles reach the top spot on the Hot 100).

The Four Lovers' song "You're The Apple Of My Eye" is a love song that expresses deep devotion and commitment. The main character of the song proclaims their love for the person they are singing to in a repetitive and catchy tune. The chorus repeats "You're the apple of my ah ah eye" several times, emphasizing that they truly love this person and will do anything to make them happy.
The song is a classic representation of 1950s doo-wop music, with its upbeat tempo and repetitive harmonies. The lyrics express a sense of innocence and earnestness that is common in early pop music. The singer is completely devoted to their loved one and promises to never leave them alone. The line "I'll love you forever, then you'll be mine alone" reinforces the idea of a committed and exclusive relationship.
The song's repetition and catchy tune make it a memorable piece of music. It represents a simpler time in popular music history, when love songs focused on purity and devotion. The Four Lovers' version of the song was popular in its time and has since been covered by many other artists.

I think Otis gave them this tune because he had to take back "Don't Be Cruel" from them. Turns out the truck driver had more pull at RCA than the Four Lovers.
