Vacation
The Go-Go’s Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Can't seem to get my mind off of you
Back here at home there's nothin' to do
Now that I'm away
I wish I'd stayed
Tomorrow's a day of mine
That you won't be in

When you looked at me, I should've run
But I thought it was just for fun
I see I was wrong
And I'm not so strong
I should've known all along
That time would tell

A week without you
Thought I'd forget
Two weeks without you and I
Still haven't gotten over you yet

Vacation, all I ever wanted
Vacation, had to get away
Vacation, meant to be spent alone

Vacation, all I ever wanted
Vacation, had to get away
Vacation, meant to be spent alone

A week without you
Thought I'd forget
Two weeks without you and I
Still haven't gotten over you yet

Vacation, all I ever wanted
Vacation, had to get away
Vacation, meant to be spent alone

Vacation, all I ever wanted
Vacation, had to get away
Vacation, meant to be spent alone

Vacation, all I ever wanted

Vacation, had to get away
Vacation, meant to be spent alone

Overall Meaning

The Go-Go's hit song "Vacation" is a catchy tune about a woman who is struggling to get her ex out of her head while on vacation. The lead vocalist, Belinda Carlisle, sings to a fast-paced new wave sound that is common to the band. In the song's first verse, she expresses how she "can't seem to get [her] mind off of [her ex]." As she is stuck at home with nothing to do, she regrets not staying in the relationship. Carlisle's lyrics emphasize how a break can seem needed from another person, but it can be challenging to take your mind off them, even while enjoying a vacation.

The chorus of "Vacation" repeats the lines "Vacation, all I ever wanted / Vacation, had to get away / Vacation, meant to be spent alone." This repetition strengthens the idea that the vacation is a much-needed break from a suffocating relationship. The second verse highlights how the singer had hoped to forget about her ex while on vacation, but time hasn't healed the memories. She sings, "Two weeks without you and I / Still haven't gotten over you yet." In total, the song is a catchy tune that encapsulates the idea of getting away from a bad relationship only to realize how much you are still attached to it.

As a 55 year old man, I to grew up listening to The Go-Go's. I was in love with all of them!
I saw them in concert at age 48, and I danced on stage with them!
They played the soundtrack to my life.
