Their best known tunes include "Our Lips Our Sealed", "Vacation", and "We Got The Beat" among others. Their trend-setting debut album, 'Beauty and the Beat', didn't just reach #1 after its 1981 release but is also considered one of the cornerstone albums of American new wave. In the beginning, they played primarily what was known as 'pop punk', and they then made their sound more sunny and romantic, having later associated themselves with the distinct sound of 80s pop rock. The Go-Go's had five Top 40 hits in their heyday.

In addition, there was a group from Newcastle in the U.K. known as "The Go-Go's" in the 60s. That artist is known for their 1964 novelty Christmas single, titled "I'm Gonna Spend My Christmas With A Dalek", which referenced the budding 'Doctor Who' craze. Like the later U.S. band of the same name, the group's name was a reference to go-go dancing.

Where I am they say you're wrong
When my sun is setting
Yours is breaking dawn
Say over there I want to talk
I wonder if we think the same thoughts
What do they teach you
How much have you bought
I think we're sharing the same lies
[Chorus]
Beneath the blue sky
We're all alone together
The calm hides stormy weather
And if we stand apart
We'll kiss goodbye
Beneath the blue sky
Way over there do you feel it too
In the end there's no privileged few
Everybody wants to live
Their lives through
[Chorus]
The Go-Go's's song "Beneath The Blue Sky" is a thought-provoking reflection on the human condition that speaks to the sense of isolation and yearning for connection experienced by people from all walks of life. The song's opening lines, "Hey over there what's going on / Where I am they say you're wrong / When my sun is setting / Yours is breaking dawn," suggest a fundamental estrangement between people, as though we inhabit separate worlds that can never fully intersect.
The song's narrator expresses a desire to bridge this gap and engage in meaningful conversation, asking, "Say over there I want to talk / I wonder if we think the same thoughts / What do they teach you / How much have you bought." These lines speak to the importance of asking questions and challenging assumptions, rather than simply going along with the status quo.
The song's chorus, "Beneath the blue sky / We're all alone together / The calm hides stormy weather / And if we stand apart / We'll kiss goodbye / Beneath the blue sky," highlights the paradox that while we are all united by our shared humanity, we are also ultimately alone with our own thoughts and feelings. The "stormy weather" underneath the surface of our lives can only be revealed through honest connection and communication with others.
Overall, "Beneath The Blue Sky" is a powerful reminder of the need for empathy, compassion, and authenticity in our relationships with others.
