The Whole World Lost Its Head
The Go-Go's Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Freeway fell into the bay
Pope's on LSD
Muslim girls are getting down
In bikinis
Nazis selling Tupperware
Door to door
Telepreachers mud-wrestling
On the dance floor

I read it in the paper
I see it on my TV
Has the whole world lost its head
(Is it just me)
Has the whole world lost its head
(Is it just me)
Has the whole world lost its head

You can buy tomatoes
That last five hundred years
Claudia Schiffer's fiancรฉ
Made her disappear
Drag queens have the Navy
Tossing in their beds
Mary ate her little lamb
And punk rock isn't dead

I read it in the paper
I see it on my TV
Has the whole world lost its head
(Is it just me)
Has the whole world lost its head
(Is it just me)
Has the whole world lost its head

I read it in the paper
I see it on my TV
Has the whole world lost its head
(Is it just me)
Has the whole world lost its head
(Is it just me)
Has the whole world lost its head
(Is it just me)
Has the whole world lost its head
Lost its head

Overall Meaning

The Go-Go's's song The Whole World Lost Its Head presents an offbeat, absurd image of the world we live in. The lyrics may seem nonsensical, but upon closer inspection, they expose the absurdities and contradictions of our society. The song starts off with the shocking image of a freeway falling into the bay, which immediately grabs the listener's attention. The following lines introduce seemingly unrelated events and characters, such as the Pope's LSD trip, Muslim girls in bikinis, and Nazi Tupperware sellers, creating an unsettling feeling of chaos and confusion.

The chorus of the song, "Has the whole world lost its head?" suggests that the bizarre events and characters are not isolated incidents but indicative of a broader sense of instability and disorientation in our world. The verses continue with more absurd scenarios, like tomatoes that last 500 years and Claudia Schiffer's fiancรฉ making her disappear. The line "drag queens have the Navy tossing in their beds" is a reference to the policy at the time which prohibited openly gay service members in the U.S. military, further highlighting the song's critique of societal norms and conventions.

Despite the seemingly random nature of the lyrics, The Go-Go's's' The Whole World Lost Its Head is a biting commentary on the absurdities and contradictions of contemporary culture, challenging the listener to question their assumptions about the world we inhabit.

The 3 tracks they released in '94 rocked. It's a shame they didn't release a full album at that time. 40 years and only 4 albums--they need to make another one!

Jarma

Agreed.
I think that was the highlight of their career.
All 3 were great.
Jane went on to make froSTed COLD and MANY of those songs were better than a anything on God bless the gogos.
The Gogos owe us a LOT more music

JC

@Jarma Good, yes. The highlight of their career? No

Dirk Belligerent

When I saw them in 2001 on the God Bless The Go-Go's tour they were singing, "Is the whole world giving head / Is it just me?" laughing themselves silly. America's Sweethearts, indeed. FINALLY in the R&RHoF!

I remember when I played this song to a friend of mine. He wasn't a big Go Go's fan. But once I played "The Whole World Lost it's Head" he actually respected them! He is a big fan to this day! Long live THE GO GO'S!!

I had the pleasure of meeting Gina Schock back in October and she is just the coolest chick ever!! Going to be seeing her again at a Punk Rock flea Market in a week, and hope to meet the other girls as soon as I can!!

It was a good comeback song for them! They should have been inducted into the hall of fame years ago! What a great band!
