Their best known tunes include "Our Lips Our Sealed", "Vacation", and "We Got The Beat" among others. Their trend-setting debut album, 'Beauty and the Beat', didn't just reach #1 after its 1981 release but is also considered one of the cornerstone albums of American new wave. In the beginning, they played primarily what was known as 'pop punk', and they then made their sound more sunny and romantic, having later associated themselves with the distinct sound of 80s pop rock. The Go-Go's had five Top 40 hits in their heyday.

In addition, there was a group from Newcastle in the U.K. known as "The Go-Go's" in the 60s. That artist is known for their 1964 novelty Christmas single, titled "I'm Gonna Spend My Christmas With A Dalek", which referenced the budding 'Doctor Who' craze. Like the later U.S. band of the same name, the group's name was a reference to go-go dancing.
We Don't Get Along
The Go-Go's Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
In the opening lines of The Go-Go's's song We Don't Get Along, there is a clear communication gap between the singer and an unnamed individual who desires straightforwardness. The singer acknowledges that they are not a serious person and that their opposite believes they should be factual in their interactions. There are indications of time management being questioned, with one person feeling that the other does not have time and the other feeling that they can wait. This fundamental misunderstanding is an underlying factor in their inability to connect.
The chorus highlights that despite the fact that the singer just desires a basic comprehension, the other individual is unable to comprehend them, causing them to always misunderstand. The final verse has the singer attempt to work things out, but the other individual does not seem to understand the gravity of the situation, and the situation seems to get worse, causing the singer to feel like they are being left broken. This raises the topic of different expectations, and how a basic lack of comprehension can result in strained relationships.
The Go-Go's's song We Don't Get Along exemplifies how communication is essential in maintaining relationships, how different individuals' expectations can cause misunderstandings and, ultimately, how not being understood or devoid of the ability to comprehend others can lead to a breakdown in even the most fundamental of relationships.

I'm not very serious
I don't take things too seriously
You want me to be straight
You want me to be more direct
I'm not out of time
I'm not in a hurry
You think I can't wait
You think I'm impatient
But you think I'm too late
You think I missed my chance
I'm not feeling desperate
I'm not in a desperate situation
Somehow you always take things wrong
You always misunderstand me somehow
CHORUS
The chorus repeats the theme that we just don't get along
When I stay up all night
When I'm up all night
You always go to sleep
You always go to bed early
When I'm thinkin' you're alright
When I think everything's okay
You just wanna fight
You just want to argue
You say I'm wrong
You always think I'm in the wrong
I just wanna talk things over
I just want to have a conversation
And you don't realize
You don't understand
You leave me broken
You hurt me emotionally
Everything is O.K.
Everything seems fine
And then you apologize
And then you say you're sorry
They just pass you by

The things that really matter to me
The things that are important to me
CHORUS
The chorus repeats the theme that we just don't get along
