Founded in Buffalo, New York, the Goo Goo Dolls, who were then known as the "Sex Maggots," initially consisted of John Rzeznik, Robby Takac, and George Tutuska. The band changed their name to the Goo Goo Dolls (the name was picked out from an ad in a True Detective magazine) at the request of a local club owner who refused to let them play otherwise. They were originally signed on by Metal Blade Records, and they released their self-titled debut album in 1987.
In their early career, they were often dismissed by critics as " The Replacements wannabes." While they were embraced by college radio and the local punk scene (Playing such venues as CBGB's), especially after the release of their third album, Hold Me Up (1990), it was not until 1995, with the release of their single "Name," (from the album A Boy Named Goo) that the Goo Goo Dolls experienced any commercial success. Their mainstream success, however, was bittersweet as they faced a lengthy legal battle with Metal Blade Records over royalties that were being withheld from the band; hence, the Goos eventually switched to Metal Blade's parent company, Warner Brothers. In 1998, "Iris" was released on the City of Angels soundtrack, and the Goos were propelled to stardom, as the song stayed on the Billboard charts at number one for 18 weeks and was nominated for three Grammys that year. The song was also included on their fifth album, "Dizzy Up the Girl," which was released that same year.
As of February 2007, The Goo Goo Dolls broke the record of having the most top 10 songs on the AC Charts, with 12 top 10 hits! Beating out Matchbox 20 and Sheryl Crow with only 10 hits.

Just had a fortnights sleep
I'm feeling strong, oh, so distracted
Ain't touched a thing all week
I'm feeling drunk, yes I am, juiced up 'n' sloppy
Ain't touched a drink all night
I'm feeling hungry, can't see the reason
Yeah, when you call my name
I salivate like a Pavlov dog
Yeah, when you lay me out
My heart is beating louder than a big bass drum
You got to mix it child
You got the fix, this must be love
It's a bitch
Yeah, you got to mix it child
You got the fix, this must be love
It's a bitch, alright
Sometimes I'm sexy, move like a stud
Kick with the girls all night
Sometimes I'm so shy, got to be worked on
Don't have no bark or bite
Yeah, when you call my name
I salivate like a Pavlov dog
Yeah, when you lay me out
My heart is pumping louder than a big bass drum, alright
You know what I want, baby.
I said, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey ('till end)
Wow Baby
The Goo Goo Dolls' song "Bitch" is a fun, energetic tune about the all-consuming power of love. The first few lines describe the physical effects of being in love: feeling so tired you can't understand it (presumably from staying up all night thinking about the person), feeling strong but distracted, and feeling drunk and juiced up even though you haven't had anything to drink. The singer is also feeling hungry, but can't understand why (until he eats a horse meat pie, which we learn later in the song).
The chorus is where the song really takes off, with the singer declaring that when he hears his love interest's name, he salivates like a Pavlov dog (a reference to the famous experiment where dogs were trained to salivate at the sound of a bell) and when they're together, his heart beats loudly like a big bass drum. He concludes that "this must be love" even though "it's a bitch", acknowledging that love can be difficult and painful at times.
The second verse continues the theme of love's unpredictability, with the singer describing how he can be both sexy and shy depending on the situation. But when he's with the person he loves, he knows what he wants and how he feels.
Overall, "Bitch" is a catchy, upbeat song that captures the highs and lows of falling in love. It's a reminder that love can be messy and complicated, but ultimately worth it in the end.
