@DANO, Michael Jay Eh, actually it's artificial. Humans create the conflict by feeding the animals so much there, making it a high-value location worth fighting over. In nature the food sources aren't so concentrated so the animals are more spread out.

Think about it. Those baby geese would have lived a better life on a farm, being raised for slaughter. At least they would have lived to adulthood. Nature isn't a Disney movie, it's a horror movie.

That's nonsense. In the meat industry, geese are killed at 10 weeks old. They are juveniles, similar to 2 or 3 year old humans. Female geese start laying at 2 years of age on average. When animals are farmed for meat, they are usually killed as either juveniles or adolescents. They only live to adulthood if they are used for breeding. And even then, they get killed when they are too old (not necessarily sterile, but old enough to hurt their reproductive success).

And even if the farm was a better living condition than the wild, that does make it OK. Imagine if people captured humans and bred them as slaves, and the slaves had a better life than many humans as they were fed properly and didn't have to worry about money, education or work. And most of them were desexed, reducing their sexual/romantic desires significantly so they didn't have to worry about that, and were happy being virgins and single. They never had to die slow, painful deaths because they would be euthanised if they were severely ill, whether they liked it or not. And they were lead to believe that their owners were good and weren't exploiting them, so that they would not rebel or suffer. They didn't feel like they weren't free, for they were free range.

What happens to animals in the wild doesn't justify keeping them in capitivity. Even if they have a better life in capitivity, because domesticated animals are bred, not taken from the wild. And animals taken from the wild have a worse life in capitivity. And breeding animals in capitivity is really bad for the environment and wildlife.

Another thing is that the geese in the video are Canada geese (Branta canadensis). Domestic geese are Anser anser domesticus, with a few breeds being Anser cygnoides domesticus instead. So perhaps I should have compared the lives of the slaves to chimpanzees rather than other humans. If wild animals were farmed for meat, their meat would probably taste gamey, as livestock have been domesticated for meat.

The main problem for the geese is the swan, he won't allow them to raise their young in this lake. He constantly attacks the geese whenever he sees them with their young. If the swan wasn't there, the geese wouldn't be separated from their goslings and would be in a far better position to protect them against the predatory birds.

I wonder if these were first time parents. They seem pretty lost at how to keep their chicks together and safe. That said, I'm sure that swan could've put a whooping on both of them easily, so perhaps they were wise to stay out of its way...

That's what happen when we build artificial environnement that ''invites'' species from other natural habitats. At least it involved natives species. Introduced mute swans have been fucking up North America's lakes and ponds for a while. There have been eradication attempts in Ontario since they outcompete native ducks.

Nature isn't nice, nature just is. And when Canada geese get to spawning a bit too prolifically, predatory birds will step it up and make sure the numbers don't get out of control. It's interesting to see the differences in behavior like the OP notices: herons stalk in and grab what it looks like is theirs by right, crows dart in, grab and fly away fast like they are stealing something. And the seagull? Now that's a Chad. Makes a snatch and misses, so comes back and grabs a chick half it's size, and proceeds to swallow it down whole all casual-like.

I've seen herons killed and eaten by eagles and heron nestlings taken away by hawks and owls. It's a dog-eat-dog etc... There are videos on YT showing gulls swallowing rabbits so I wasn't therefore too surprised that one could swallow a gosling. I was surprised a little, however, by the way the crow held the gosling with one foot and then started plucking it like a true raptor.

not just canadian goslings . I am surpised there are any ducks left . Gulls ,and crows do not have the fear of predation anymore. the odd Sparrow hawk will take one but Goshawks and eagle owls need to be re introduced to take out these merciless killers As for Heron they will kill anything.

The video here I think is an extreme case. The combination of inexperienced goose parents, and a territoriality aggressive mute swan provided this opportunity.

Experienced goose parents not only protect most, if not all their goslings, the most successful ones even adopt(sometimes forcefully) other goslings and form gang broods.

The window for eating goslings is pretty small as well. They practically double in size in less then two weeks.

Endothermy actually makes animals need to eat more. So if they are predatory, they'll kill more often and are less likely to hunt in packs. And regardless of their diet, endotherms compete more for food. Also, birds are more endothermic than mammals (yes, that's right, it's a spectrum). Also, aren't mammals "brutal" like this too?

Even if it was somehow not fatally injured by that point, the parents wouldnt keep it. Birds think nothing of abandoning weakened offspring amd some species will actively encourage their death.

Goslings taken by the heron and gull got lucky. Swallowed whole and suffocate fairly fast. Gosling taken by the crow geta slowly eaten alive. Nature isnt nice.

the goslings cannot be saved. The swan doesn't allow their parents in the water and on their own they are helpless. On their own they are easily picked up by the sea gull, heron and crow. All they goslings that were hatched on this water were taken, none survived. If they were someone rescued from the crow and put back into the water, the sea gull or heron would take them.

It is like.."out of the frying pan and into the fire". If the gosling was rescued from the crow and put into the water, it would be picked up by a seagull or heron. There is no safe place for it. The seagulls are circling the water everyday and picking out goslings.
