What Do You Want Paul?
The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals Cast Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

What do you want, Paul?
Tell me what you desire to see, your deepest intent, Paul
What do you see for this company?
I′m longing for someone with strong ambition
Someone to sell their specific vision
Someone to share with precise precision their thoughts
Cause I want you to want
To want

So, what do you want, Paul?
What's that one concrete goal that motivates all your actions?

I don′t think I have one of those

Well, then how's anyone supposed to sympathize with you, Paul?

I don't know
I want what anyone wants, money, a partner
Kids someday, maybe

I want you to want, Paul
A man so vague just can′t be trusted
Something you pine for
Maybe someone who keeps you lusted
I′m just a boss, I'm not an idea guide
I hired you, Paul, to keep our stock high
But if you can′t pin that point that's in the sky
Then I want you to want
To want

You know what I want for myself?
I′ve waited for so long to tell somebody else
Carol, my wife
You're my muse, my source of light
Carol, my love, I want you to choke me out at night
I want you to choke me
I want you to choke me
I want tou to choke me while I jerk off
I want you to choke me while I jerk off
Melissa, get my wife in the phone for me

Mr. Davidson, I think I should leave

No Paul, I want you to hear this
If you leave you′re fired
Carol?
Yes, everything's fine, I promise
I just wanted to tell you something
I... ah
I forgot what it was
Huh, maybe someday I'll remember
Goodbye

Paul, now you know what it is to want

I wanna go home

You could sense a man with a passion to drive the prime recon
So take up yoga or improv classes
Volunteer at shelters or twitch to the masses
There′s gotta be something that′ll keep my hands off you
Off you
Cause I want you to want

I'm going to go get some coffee
Do you want anything?

No, I need you to want

How about a nice caramel frap?
Nothing better

And if you don′t want
We're through
Paul

Overall Meaning

The song "What Do You Want Paul?" by The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals Cast is a conversation between two characters - Mr. Davidson and Paul. The lyrics explore Mr. Davidson's frustration with Paul's lack of ambition and clear goals. Through this conversation, Mr. Davidson tries to understand what drives Paul and what he truly desires.

The song starts by Mr. Davidson asking Paul what he wants, what his deepest desires and intentions are for the company they work for. Mr. Davidson is looking for someone with strong ambition and a clear vision to share their thoughts and ideas. He wants Paul to have a concrete goal that motivates all his actions.

However, Paul admits that he doesn't have a specific goal or ambition. He simply wants what everyone else wants - money, a partner, and maybe kids someday. This vague and undefined desire frustrates Mr. Davidson because he believes that a person without a clear passion cannot be trusted. He wants Paul to have something he truly longs for, something that keeps him motivated and lusted for success.

As the conversation progresses, Paul surprises everyone by revealing his true desire - his wife, Carol. He sees her as his muse, a source of light, and he wants her to be a part of his intimate fantasies. This revelation is shocking to both Mr. Davidson and the audience as it exposes Paul's personal desires and adds a layer of complexity to his character. Mr. Davidson, although caught off guard, insists that Paul stays and hear him out.

Ultimately, Mr. Davidson realizes that there must be something that will keep his hands off Paul, figuratively meaning something that will keep him interested and driven. He suggests that Paul explores different activities like yoga or improv classes, volunteering at shelters, or creating content on Twitch to find something that sparks his passion.

The song ends with Mr. Davidson offering to get coffee, asking Paul if he wants anything. Paul, however, responds with the same line Mr. Davidson used earlier, emphasizing that he still wants Paul to have a strong desire for something in his life. The final repetition of Paul's name signifies the unresolved tension and the questions left hanging between the two characters.

In summary, "What Do You Want Paul?" delves into the frustration and confusion surrounding Paul's lack of ambition and clear goals. It highlights the importance of having strong desires and passions in life, particularly in a professional setting. The song also explores the unexpected revelation of Paul's personal desires and the effect it has on the dynamics between him and Mr. Davidson.

@Runelerune

I can't believe you references there being multiple Paul clones! I don't think anyone else has done that!

@Otisboy121

You may be the only person so far who has made an animatic of this!
And it’s pretty well done.
Congrats!

@The_M2023

Thanks but I only commissioned and gave character description and movement. Peacheskimi did all of the animated work and deserves most of the credit!

@Otisboy121

Still, well done to all.

@kitrobins4469

1:18 I love that you kept in the most beautiful choreography in the show 😂

@-Commit-arson-

A weird thing I’ve seen most of these animations do is color are the eyes purple
And the lore of the hatchet Field series is that if there’s something going on, it’s usually an elder God
Specifically, one of the five lords in black
And the fun thing about having five big bads is that they are color-coded
And the elder God responsible for the guy who didn’t like musicals
Is pokey the blue one
Not blinky the purple one
It’s a small detail I guess but still

@veronica_sawyer_1989

gosh I love this musical this animatic is so good

@QuikVidGuy

Oh wow, that last PAAAAAUUUUL is a lot stronger on the cast recording than in the proshot. Much more diaphragm
