1) The Highwaymen was an American country music supergroup, composed of four of the genre's biggest artists, known for their pioneering influence on the outlaw country subgenre: Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson. Active between 1985 and 1995, the group recorded three major label albums as The Highwaymen: two on Columbia Records and one for Liberty Records. Their Columbia works produced three chart singles, including the number one "Highwayman" in 1985.
Between 1996 and 1999, Nelson, Kristofferson, Cash, and Jennings also provided the voice and dramatization for the Louis L'Amour Collection, a four-CD box set of seven Louis L'Amour stories published by the HighBridge Company, although the four were not credited as "The Highwaymen" in this work.
Besides the four formal members of the group, only one other vocal recording artist appeared on a Highwaymen recording: Johnny Rodriguez, who provided Spanish vocal on "Deportee", a Woody Guthrie composition, from "Highwayman".
The four original members starred in a movie together: the 1986 film Stagecoach.
2) The Highwaymen were a collegiate folk group from the 1960s who had a significant impact on the folk scene of that time and remain famous for the song "Michael" and "Cotton Fields." Formed in 1958 while the band members were at college, the group broke up in 1964 after releasing eight albums and ten singles. They reunited in 1987, minus Chan Daniels (who died in 1975), for a concert for their 25th college reunion. Between then and 2009, the band has performed ten to twelve concerts a year. Today, two of the original five members (Steve Butts and Steve Trott) are still alive, with Dave Fisher dying on May 7, 2010, Gil Robbins (father of actor Tim Robbins) dying on April 5, 2011, and Bob Burnett dying on December 8, 2011.

This one and only life?
Endin' up just another lost and lonely wife
You'll count up the years
And they will be filled with tears
Love only breaks up, to start over again
You'll get the babies, but you won't have your man
While he is busy loving every woman that he can, uh-huh
It's easier said than done
When you just can't break away
(When you just can't break away)
Oh, young hearts run free
Never be hung up
Hung up like my man and me
My man and me
Ooh, young hearts, to yourself be true
Don't be no fool when love really don't love you
Don't love you
It's high time now, just one crack at life
Who wants to live in, in trouble and strife
My mind must be free
To learn all I can about me, uh-huh
I'm gonna love me, for the rest of my days
Encourage the babies every time they say
Self-preservation is what's really going on today
Say "I'm gonna turn loose" a thousand times a day
But how can I turn loose
When I just can't break away?
(When I just can't break away)
Oh, young hearts run free
They'll never be hung up
Hung up like my man and me
You and me
Ooooh, young hearts, to yourself be true
Don't be no fool when love really don't love you
Don't love you
Oh, young hearts run free
They'll never be hung up
Hung up like my man and me
My man and me
Oh-oh-oh, young hearts, to yourself be true
Don't be no fool when love really don't love you
It don't love you
Oh, young hearts run free
They'll never be hung up
Hung up like my man and me
My man and me
Oh, young hearts, to yourself be true
Don't be no fool when love really don't love you
Don't love you
Oh, young hearts run free
They'll never be hung up
Hung up like my man and me
The lyrics of "Young Hearts Run Free" is a song by Candi Staton about a woman who has resigned herself to a life of being in a relationship where her partner continuously cheats on her. She begins to realize the importance of self-love and self-preservation, encouraging herself to break free from the cycle of heartbreak. The first verse speaks to the futility of staying in a relationship that is constantly causing pain and loneliness. She admits that she has tried to leave but can't seem to break away from the cycle.
As the song progresses, she realizes that her focus needs to be on her own life and her own happiness. It's time for her to live her life to the fullest and not be caught up in the drama of her partner's infidelity. The chorus encourages young hearts to run free and to be true to themselves, not getting caught up in a love that doesn't love them back. She speaks directly to herself admitting that she has been a fool, but it is time to take control of her life.
The overall message of the song is about the importance of self-love and self-preservation. The singer realizes that staying in a toxic relationship is only causing her pain and preventing her from living her best life. She encourages herself and others to break the cycle and focus on living life to the fullest.

The crops are all in and the peaches are rott'ning,
The oranges piled in their creosote dumps;
They're flying 'em back to the Mexican border
To pay all their money to wade back again
Goodbye to my Juan, goodbye, Rosalita,
Adios mis amigos, Jesus y Maria;
You won't have your names when you ride the big airplane,
All they will call you will be "deportees"
My father's own father, he waded that river,
They took all the money he made in his life;
My brothers and sisters they working the old church,
They rode the big truck still laydown and died
"Chorus"
The sky plane caught fire over Los Gatos Canyon,
A fireball of lightning, and shook all our hills,
Who are all these friends, all scattered like dry leaves?
The radio says, "They are just deportees"
"Chorus"

My brothers and sisters come working the fruit trees,
And they rode the truck till they took down and died.
Some of us are illegal, and some are not wanted,
Our work contract's out and we have to move on;
Six hundred miles to that Mexican border,
They chase us like outlaws, like rustlers, like thieves.
We died in your hills, we died in your deserts,
We died in your valleys and died on your plains.
We died 'neath your trees and we died in your bushes,
Both sides of the river, we died just the same.
The sky plane caught fire over Los Gatos Canyon,
A fireball of lightning, and shook all our hills,
Who are all these friends, all scattered like dry leaves?
The radio says, "They are just deportees"
Is this the best way we can grow our big orchards?
Is this the best way we can grow our good fruit?
To fall like dry leaves to rot on my topsoil
And be called by no name except "deportees"?

If anyone's wondering, the deportees from this song were finally identified a few years back by a very determined young man.
