The Honorary Title was a rock band from Brooklyn, New York composed of Jarrod Gorbel, Aaron Kamstra, Jon Wiley, and Adam Boyd. Gorbel became known for his dark sense of humor, which often worked its way into the band's songs.
Their first release was a self-titled EP. They received much attention and did major touring after they released a full length album on Doghouse Records in 2004 entitled, "Anything Else But the Truth". The album was recorded in Nashville and New York with producer Roger Moutenot who has also worked with Yo La Tengo and Guster. Videos are available for the singles "Everything I Once Had", "Bridge and Tunnel", & "Frame by Frame".
On October 24, 2009 Jarrod announced that The Honorary Title would play their final show on Friday, November 20, 2009. Gorbel released a solo EP called Ten Years Older on his 2010 acoustic tour with Dustin Dobernig. In an interview with weworemasks.com, Gorbel says, "It’s considered a solo session, but…The Honorary Title might be over." He also said he is working on a solo LP. He continues to record and play music, but under his name.

Blades in my stomach spinning
I awake with a fear of ??
Hiding by the stress of your love
I won't return your calls until it lets up
Oh, just one more season, you will be good
Tonight, oh
'Cause when I'm concentratin'
On makin' statements
I will fool you into thinkin' we're fine
Yeah, I'll fool you, fool you, fool you, into thinkin' we're fine
Until you start to feel something outside
Yeah, well, you alone can visualize
Not worth the misery
A sordid history
The years of revelry
We converse endlessly
Those powdered lips that say you cry
You start to feel something outside
Tonight, oh
Don't even, don't even try
It's not me that was mistaken
For an earnest, heartfelt evening
For a moon-induced hallucination
Couldn't help but notice
Your eyes are losing focus
Such magnetism, now you're opposed
But if you're not begging for it
Then it's not yours
Once dependent, now no signs of withdrawal
Not worth the misery
A sordid history
The years of revelry
We converse endlessly
Those powdered lips that say you cry
Well, you start to feel something outside
Tonight, oh
Don't even, don't even, don't
Please talk softly now
No need to scream
The raise in decibels seems obscene
Please talk softly now
No need to scream
The raise in decibels seems obscene
Tonight, well, tonight
You sold everything you've been told
I apologize
The Honorary Title's song Apologize seems to reflect on a past relationship that was riddled with problems and difficulties. The opening lines of the song, "Yesterday's dinner's haunting me today / Blades in my stomach spinning," suggest that the singer is physically ill from the stress and anxiety of their relationship. The lyrics also mention that the singer is avoiding their partner's calls until the stress lets up, suggesting that the relationship is currently on the rocks.
The chorus of the song, "Don't even, don't even try," further emphasizes the idea that the singer is done trying to make the relationship work. The verses allude to the fact that the singer has been putting on a façade of happiness, fooling their partner into thinking that everything is fine. However, the line "Until you start to feel something outside" suggests that their partner is beginning to see through the mask and sense that something is wrong.
The bridge of the song appears to be an attempt to salvage the relationship, with the singer acknowledging their mistakes and apologizing to their partner: "You sold everything you've been told / I apologize." However, it's unclear whether this apology is genuine or simply a last-ditch effort to save the relationship.
Overall, Apologize seems to be a poignant reflection on the ups and downs of a troubled relationship, with lyrics that speak to both the turmoil and the occasional moments of tenderness that come with falling in and out of love.
