The band drew upon a variety of stylistic influences over the course of their career, including 1960s beat music, soul, rhythm and blues and psychedelic rock, as well as 1970s punk and new wave. The trio was known for its melodic pop songs, its distinctly English flavour and its mod image. The band launched the career of Paul Weller, who went on to form The Style Council and later had a successful solo career. Weller wrote and sang most of The Jamβs original compositions, and he played lead guitar, using a Rickenbacker. Bruce Foxton provided backing vocals and prominent basslines, which were the foundation of many of the bandβs songs, including the hits "Down in the Tube Station at Midnight", "The Eton Rifles", "Going Underground" and "Town Called Malice".

Takin' My Love
The Jam Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You're shakin' all over and it's feeling alright now
You're rockin' and rollin' and I don't know what to say
But daddy's little cat's gonna rock all day
Well come on pretty woman you know what I mean now
The beat's just screaming right through' your head
You're shakin' my heart, you're shakin' my soul -
I just go crazy when you rock-n-roll
There you go takin' my love from me
Drive you home my country rose now
Hold you tight never let you go now
Kissing and huggin' outside your door
Til your pa sees and wants no more
The Jam's song Takin' My Love is an energetic rock and roll anthem about the pursuit of love and the overwhelming passion it can bring. The opening lines "Well come on pretty baby you know what I like now, You're shakin' all over and it's feeling alright now" set the tone for a danceable, upbeat song that celebrates the joys of physical attraction. The singer is clearly enamored with his love interest, and he can't resist her alluring movements as she shakes and rocks to the beat of the music. The lyrics capture the excitement and frenzy of being caught up in the moment and overcome by desire.
As the song progresses, the lyrics continue to emphasize the powerful effect that the woman has on the singer. The lines "The beat's just screaming right through' your head, You're shakin' my heart, you're shakin' my soul - I just go crazy when you rock-n-roll" show how fully he is swept away by her charisma and energy. He can't resist her, and he knows that she is taking his love from him with every movement and every note of the music.
Despite the intensity of his feelings, there is also an underlying sense of nostalgia and romance throughout the song. The lines "Drive you home my country rose now, Hold you tight never let you go now, Kissing and huggin' outside your door Til your pa sees and wants no more" suggest a simpler, more innocent time when chivalry and courtship were still in fashion. The singer is eager to take his love home and keep her close, but there is also a sense of reverence and respect for the traditions that have shaped his upbringing.
All in all, Takin' My Love is a lively and passionate tribute to the power of rock and roll and the intoxicating allure of romantic love.
