About You
The Jesus & Mary Chain Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I can see that you and me
Live our lives in the pouring rain
And the raindrops beat out of time to our refrain

And you and me will win you see
People die in their living-rooms
But they do not need this God Almighty gloom
There's something warm about the rain
There's something warm
There's something warm
There's something warm in eberything
I know there's something good
There's something good
About you
About you
About you
I know there's something warm
There's something warm

There's something warm
Good about you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Jesus and Mary Chain's song About You seem to express a sense of togetherness and resilience in the face of life's challenges. The rain is a metaphor for the difficulties and hardships we face, but rather than letting it bring them down, the two speakers in the song find warmth and comfort in each other's company. The repetition of the phrase "there's something warm" emphasizes this theme of finding positivity in negative situations. They acknowledge that people die every day, but they refuse to let the weight of mortality bring them down with "God Almighty gloom." Instead, they hold onto the hope that they will overcome these struggles and come out stronger on the other side.

The song has a dreamy, psychedelic feel to it, and the lyrics are somewhat abstract, leaving room for personal interpretation. However, themes of human connection, hope, and finding comfort in difficult times are present throughout. The repetition of phrases and the use of metaphor create a hypnotic effect that draws the listener in and invites them to reflect on their own experiences.

It was sort of like when GNR came out with Appetite for Destruction: It was such a huge hit that the band wanted to bury it and all ties to their previous sound and come out with something different and maybe even bigger and better.

That’s what The Jesus and Mary Chain, in my opinion, did in 1987 when they released Darklands. :)
