You Can't Win
The Kinks Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You'll try and you'll try again
But you know you can't win
You'll try and you'll try again
But you know you can't win
What more can I say now?
What more can I do?
No need to feel sad now
'Cause times are pretty thin
And you can't win
You can't win
You can't win
Try and do what you can
But you know you can't win

You say you don't understand
But you know you can't win
What more can you say now?
What more can you do?
No need to feel sad now

'Cause times are pretty thin
And you can't win
You can't win
You can't win

What more can I say now?
What more can I do?
No need to feel sad now

'Cause times are pretty thin
You can't win

You can't win
You can't win

Overall Meaning

The Kinks’ song You Can’t Win speaks about the reality that sometimes despite all honest efforts and hard work, we cannot achieve our desired goals. The opening lines say, “You'll try and you'll try again, But you know you can't win.” This highlights the frustration that arises from one’s repeated efforts, but ultimately reaching a point where one realizes it’s impossible to win. The second half of the lyrics address the acknowledgment that the circumstances one finds themselves in may not allow for triumph. The lines, “'Cause times are pretty thin, And you can't win,” suggests the idea that there might be external factors in play that may prevent success.

It is important to note that despite the lyrics' spiritual defeat, the tone of the song is not pessimistic. Instead, it encourages acceptance of the situation and finding peace in the face of the unattainable. The lines, “No need to feel sad now,” suggests that one should view failure as a part of life and move on with optimism. One takes comfort in the fact that they tried their best and was unable to overcome the challenges. Instead, as the song suggests, one must accept defeat, learn from it, and move forward with the knowledge gained from the experience.

Overall, You Can’t Win is a clear reflection of the ups and downs of life. Despite one’s attempts, there will inevitably be times when success is impossible to achieve. However, the song encourages acceptance, urging listeners to focus on the experience and learning rather than solely on the outcome.

This song is genuinely poignant, which is a tough trick to pull off.  It's too easy to slip into the maudlin or sentimental, but Ray really pulls it off here.  Bravo!

Can't believe that this isn't regularly featured on so-called "classic" radio, but then that's true of so many Kinks songs.

Too right, I never hear any Kinks on the ‘classic’ stations..

There’s a restaurant in the U.S. called MOD Pizza and they have a music channel which features 1960s Kinks, it’s available to listen online. I probably only knew a couple 1960s Kinks songs before hearing more on MOD Pizza, “You Can’t Win” is my favorite

This is a reference to 1930's Jack Black's novel of the same name, which greatly influenced William S. Burroughs (whom outright admitted to lifting parts of it for his novel Junky)
