Land of the Free
The Koreans Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

"One slice for you, John Doe.
Another for your wife.
As long as you don't ever question us,
We'll leave you free to get on with your life.
'Cos it's so easy now you don't need to wonder.
You'll be happy you're not another number.
It's so easy now you don't need to wonder.
You'll be happy you're not a number."

But I lie awake every night, worried I'm just not myself,
Like a good dog, I do everything that I am told.
But a bad dog couldn't bite the hand that feeds him when,
There's a stronger hand that holds a gun up to his head.
This ain't freedom, everything is done for you.
This ain't freedom, you live in the land that's brave and true.
This ain't freedom, everything is just the way you want.
This ain't freedom, and you don't have a voice to say we're wrong.

"Widescreen for you, John Doe.
A fridge-freezer for your wife.

This ain't freedom, you don't have a voice to say we're wrong.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of The Koreans's song "Land of the Free" are an evocative critique of the illusion of freedom in contemporary Western society. The song's themes are driven home through the repetition of the phrase "This ain't freedom," which is repeated in the chorus and serves as a blistering indictment of the way in which people are manipulated into thinking that they are free when in reality they are not.

The verses explore this idea further, painting a picture of a world in which material possessions are paraded as symbols of freedom and contentment, while in fact people are stripped of their power to think and act for themselves. The imagery of dogs is particularly powerful, suggesting that people have been domesticated and trained to accept their lot in life without resistance.

The repeated refrain "This ain't freedom" speaks to the artist's sense of anger and disillusionment with a world in which the quest for wealth and status has replaced genuine human connection and empathy. In this way, the song is a powerful call for people to wake up and recognize the manipulations to which they are subjected.

@japierce15 so, you are saying that someone that holds down say 80 hours a week at a menial job is 'lazy'?...working hard doesen't mean you'll live...try living on 1,100 dollars a month for a year or so and get back to me comrade...and yes i know 1100 in 'most of the world' is a lot....but hi, we live in america

@juche54

@TheTollundWoman amen! comrade....we agree

@juche54

it can? Would that be good for the donkey?...and, if they produced offspring what would it be? a commdonkey? or a donkunist? Interesting point you bring up.I've never really thought about it but i guess communism could, as you so eloquently say, f*** a donkey. However I'm not entirely sure it would serve any real purpose. Now, if on the other hand communism mated with 'no holds barred', radical, laissez faire style capitalism we might in fact see a result...just a thought...cheers...

@juche54
