Ride on
The Lad and The Others Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What are you doing, in my face!?!
Where, are you going, with all haste
How did this begin? why did we start this?
And why can't you remember?

Goddamn you
Goddamn you
Why don't you ever think
About these things that you say?
Your words are there for us
To deconstruct anyway
Yes you are a product of that environment.
But change is always there.
If you want it!

Cold and foreign, spirit broken.
Please can we go home?

No!

What the fuck was that?
I'm being completely rational.
I'm not yelling!
I'm every relationship
There has to be compromise
And everyone of them has baggage.
I know I have my issues.
And we! know! you! have! yours!

Put it in gear motherfucker!

For tonight, we ride!

Deny the ride.

You and I, connect and emerge.

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of "Ride On" by The Lad and The Others see the singer feeling frustrated and bewildered by the actions of someone close to them. The lines "What are you doing, in my face!?!" and "Where, are you going, with all haste" indicate that the person is intruding upon their personal space, or perhaps acting without consideration for the singer's feelings. They then ask why they started this and why they can't remember, suggesting that the relationship may be strained or that something has happened to cause tension between them.

The mood of the song shifts as the singer directs their anger towards the other person, exclaiming "Goddamn you" repeatedly. They then call out the other person for not thinking about the consequences of their words, suggesting that they are careless or thoughtless. The lines "Yes you are a product of that environment. But change is always there. If you want it!" suggest that the singer is calling for positive change, perhaps indicating that they want the other person to take responsibility for their actions and their impact on the relationship.

The song takes an unexpected turn when the singer switches from aggression to vulnerability, describing themselves as "cold and foreign" with a broken spirit. They beg to go home as the other person continues to push them, saying "No!" The conflict continues until the end of the song, with the singer ultimately declaring that they will "ride on," despite the difficulties they are facing.

A few of my sayings as a shropshire lad, with a bit of northern sneaking in (my mom’s from Preston Lancs):

Go down the chippy to get some chips for a butty- any sandwich which uses a bap (roll) with bacon or chips as the filling is a butty

You go up to spoons for some grub, you conner believe how good the chips are round there

It’s bostin!

Conner be bothered to walk down the hill, wouldna want to walk back up.

Gunna go up high street and get some grub, what do ye want?

β€˜Proper nice’

Gizza sweet, I know ye’se got some

Pass us a can of pop before I nip out to town

Well I int got any clue about what’s gone on here

What do ye’se want now, ye’re doing me head in

β€˜Hew new brewn cew’

I am Shropshire born and bred and your accent is more Welsh than anything, even cwtch is a Welsh word.

Shropshire accent is a pure British accent farmer gangster accent

Cambrensis

My Granny always asked me for a cwtch she lived in clun, - it's like we live next to Wales, like we used to be in the kingdom of powys mon :)

I lived in shropshire most of my life. A proper shropshire accent is quite welsh. Its a mixture of welsh and "farmer giles" and maybe a small dash of brummey. Also, oswestry/ ellesmere tend to be full of people with a proper shropshire accent.

Sort Of Interesting

+Sue Rhodes It certainly is!

I grew up in Shropshire, in Wellington and then Newport, and I sounded more West Midlands than you do. Then I moved to London for a decade and California for 26.5 years, so I'm sure there's very little Shropshire left in me. But the fact that our accents would have sounded so disparate, even when I lived there, goes to show that accents are still very localised.

Plant Oh

I lived in Newport too! and then moved to Oswestry lol

I’m from Australia, and I just discovered an ancestor of mine was a Shropshire native before being convicted and sent to Australia. I wanted to get an idea of what he might have sounded like :) thank you!

Fascinating. I've spent a few nights in Oswestry this year, and I always listen out for accents. Most people I heard speak sounded Welsh to me.

Absolutely love this! I was staring at photos on the wall of my grandfather's grandparents (who raised him) and wondering what they sounded like in his family home. Decided to Google what an accent from Oswestry, Shropshire sounded like and there you are in living color and on a boat even (yeah!)! All but about three of your terms/sayings I use today. I write the way many of your flashcards are written and I am in the middle of the United States. Family thing? Maybe. Even your facial features brought my ancestors portrait alive. Thank you for posting. Now I am off to see if I can find a similar video for my Welsh great great grandmother!
