EVER
The Lemonheads Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We hit the highway in the shimmer glare of summer
And past the window all the trees flew by behind her
She tuned the radio 'til music was around us
A rushing calm around my heart I knew had found us

It feels so good to me
I have to make you see
Why does this ever have to end?
I know commitment is not the trend
Don't misunderstand what I intend
When I say this doesn't have to end

We washed the dishes knowing everything was all right
And there together in the curtain drifting twilight
I know your laughter shouldn't make me feel so scared
How could I doubt you, I know how much you cared

I hear it when you sigh
But I still don't know why

Why does this ever have to end?
Why can't I give you my heart and hand?
I think you're too scared to understand
This doesn't ever have to end...go!

I see you standing by a window in the hall
Our eyes collide without a single word at all
The record asks, "will you still need me when I'm sixty four?"
I can't imagine that I wouldn't need you more
Too many tears to cry
I just won't let it die

This doesn't ever have to end
Life is so long and my heart won't mend
You are my lover, you're my best friend

But this doesn't ever have to end
End on

Overall Meaning

The Lemonheads' song "Ever" is a romantic ballad about a couple on a road trip, enjoying the summer and each other's company. The first verse describes the beginning of their journey, as they drive down a highway surrounded by trees, with music on the radio creating a feeling of calmness and joy. The second verse takes place during a quiet moment together in the evening, where they wash the dishes and enjoy each other's laughter. The song is about the fear of losing the love between these two people and a plea for it to continue, despite society's reluctance to commit.

The chorus of "Ever" is a passionate plea for the relationship to continue. The singer is trying to convince their partner that it doesn't have to end, and that they are committing to a loving relationship. They acknowledge that commitment is not the trendy thing to do, but they want their love to last. The second verse is about the singer's doubts about their partner's feelings. They feel scared even when they hear their partner's laughter, unsure if the love will continue.

The third verse continues the theme of doubt and uncertainty that permeates the song. It visualizes a moment when the two lock eyes, with the record playing "will you still need me when I'm sixty-four?" The singer can’t imagine not needing their partner, but their tears reveal their hesitation. The final chorus is a triumphant affirmation that this love story doesn't ever have to end.

I really love early Lemonheads. Hate Your Friends is one of my all time favorite albums. And this song is one of my all time favorite songs period. Such a great emotional song. I loved it the first time I heard it in 1990 and still love it today.

@oregonsurfer

Such a great song, it made such an impression on me at 14 and it is seared into the memory and nostalgia for so much from that time. On my bike, listening to the HYF cassette on a walkman riding through Boston.
