It was formed in 1932 by Thomas Beecham, and played its first concert on October 7 of that year. In 1939 it became self-governing, with members of the orchestra themselves taking decisions on the organisation's affairs. During the Second World War the Orchestra was particularly active in touring the country and bringing orchestral music to places where it was not usually available.
Other principal conductors of the orchestra have included Adrian Boult (1951-57), Bernard Haitink (1967-79) and Georg Solti (1979-83). In 2000, Kurt Masur was appointed to the post, succeeded in 2007 by Vladimir Jurowski.
As well as its London concerts the orchestra frequently tours internationally.
As well as giving many classical concerts, the LPO has made several film soundtracks, including Lawrence of Arabia, Philadelphia, The Mission and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, as well as some CD albums of the music from the video game series Dragon Quest, and the soundtrack for Xenosaga Episode I. They also occasionally play on popular music records, like Chick Corea's album Corea Concerto or Nightwish's Once for example. In the mid-90s the LPO even released a tribute album to English rock band Led Zeppelin with covers of the bands songs, including an infamous rendition of “Kashmir”.

We wish you a Merry Christmas,
We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
[Chorus]
Glad tidings we bring
To you and your King
We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
So bring us some figgy pudding,
So bring us some figgy pudding,
So bring us some figgy pudding and a cup of good cheer.
[Chorus]
We won't go until we got some,
We won't go until we got some,
We won't go until we got some, so bring some out here.
[Chorus]
We wish you a Merry Christmas,
We wish you a Merry Christmas,
We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
[Chorus]
The song "We Wish You A Merry Christmas" is a traditional Christmas carol that originated in England during the 16th century. The lyrics are a festive greeting wishing the listener a merry Christmas and a happy New Year. The song starts with repeating the opening line three times, then proceeds to the chorus which includes the line "Glad tidings we bring, To you and your King" likely referencing the story of the birth of Jesus Christ.
The second verse is a request for some "figgy pudding" and "a cup of good cheer", which is also repeated three times with the chorus in between. The final verse is a playful demand stating that the carolers will not leave until they have been given some figgy pudding, reinforcing the jovial mood of the song.
The song has become very popular as a Christmas staple and is often sung at Christmas parties and events. The lively tune and playful lyrics make it a festive favorite, creating a sense of warmth and joy during the holiday season.
