Daydream
The Lovin' Spoonful Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What a day for a daydream
What a day for a daydreamin' boy
And I'm lost in a daydream
Dreamin' 'bout my bundle of joy
And even if time ain't really on my side
It's one of those days for takin' a walk outside
I'm blowin' the day to take a walk in the sun
And fall on my face on somebody's new mowed lawn

I've been havin' a sweet dream
I been dreamin' since I woke up today
It's starrin' me and my sweet dream
'Cause she's the one that makes me feel this way

And even if time has passing me by a lot
I couldn't care less about the dues you say I got
Tomorrow I'll pay the dues for droppin' my load
A pie in your face for bein' a sleepy bulltoad

And you can be sure that if you're feelin' right
A daydream will last along into the night
Tomorrow at breakfast you may pick up your ears
Or you may be daydreamin' for a thousand years

What a day for a daydream
Custom made for a daydreamin' boy

And now I'm lost in a daydream
Dreamin 'bout my bundle of joy

Overall Meaning

The Lovin' Spoonful's "Daydream" is a classic feel-good song that speaks of enjoying life's simple pleasures, losing yourself in a moment of tranquility, and celebrating love. The song is an upbeat celebration of daydreams, sweet dreams, and the joys of life. The opening lyrics invite listeners to escape reality and get lost in a daydream, where time isn't a factor and anything is possible.

The chorus is a fitting mantra for anyone who has experienced the blissful escape of a daydream. The singer repeats the phrase "What a day for a daydream" and emphasizes that it is a "custom made" daydream, tailored for a "daydreamin' boy." The lyrics go on to describe the singer's dream girl, who is the "bundle of joy" that makes him feel this way. He acknowledges that time may be passing him by, but he chooses not to worry about the "dues" that he may have to pay for dropping his load but instead focus on enjoying his daydream.

The lyrics of "Daydream" evoke a carefree and optimistic spirit that resonates with listeners even today. It's a song about enjoying life's simple pleasures and finding happiness in the moment. The catchy melody, lively tune, and upbeat lyrics make it a song that's hard to resist. @oz1902

That's exactly how I felt when I heard it back in the sixties as a 12 year old schoolboy, although I was still eight years short of the target.

Kyle Hine oh my God bro yes like I heard it when I was like 2 and I never knew what It was called and it would just randomly play in my head every once in a while lol

Same here Oz. In 66 when this song was released I was 12, but I still remember lovin the Spoonful. Thirty years later I saw John perform a 2 hour gig in Eugene, Oregon. It was a very "personal" type get together with less than 100 people. John sang and played guitar, harmonica, piano and that unmistakable autoharp. The best part was when he'd stop playing and take questions. Just a wonderful evening with wonderful friends in beautiful Eugene.

They were definitely 1 of the 10 best rock bands from the incomparable 1960s, their songs are ageless and forever listenable.

I'm only 15 and this song already brings back feeling of nostalgia, just a phenomenal song. I'm tearing up. I remember this is one of the first songs I learned to play and sing on guitar. The Lovin' Spoonful are one of my all time favorite bands, #1. This band deserves so much recognition than it has.
