The Maine was created by bassist Garrett Nickelsen and drummer Patrick Kirch in November 2006. Singer John O'Callaghan joined soon after auditions for the band with no prior vocal experience, along with musicians Ryan Osterman and Alex Ross. Together, they collectively released the EP Stay Up, Get Down. Shortly thereafter Ryan and Alex departed the band for unknown reasons, but were replaced with Kennedy Brock and Jared Monaco. The Maine signed to Fearless Records and debuted with a five song EP entitled The Way We Talk in 2007.
I'm Sorry

I shouldn't drive tonight
But I keep thinking of you
I hurt you again
I shouldn't lie tonight
so the next few words are true
Never again, never again, no
Never again, never again, no
Never again, never again, no
Will I leave you high and dry
This time, I more than mean it
I'm sorry
I'm not what you wanted
I'm sorry
I'm sorry I let you down
I could use some poor excuse
'Cause the hardest thing to say
Oh, it's the hardest thing to say in the world
I'm sorry
Yeah, I'm sorry
Well, I'm messed up again
Thinking the times and I was lost and you let me in
And I'm only human
But both you and I know the way this will end
So I said
Never again, never again, no
Will I leave you high and
Never again, never again, no
Yeah, never again, never again, no
Will I leave you high and dry
This time, I more than mean it, yeah
I'm sorry
I'm not what you wanted
I'm sorry
I'm sorry I let you down
I could use some poor excuse
'Cause the hardest thing to say
Oh, it's the hardest thing to say in the world
I'm sorry
I'm sorry
Yeah, I'm sorry
I'm sorry
I'm not what you wanted
I'm sorry
I'm sorry I let you down
And I could use some poor excuse
'Cause the hardest thing to say
Oh, it's the hardest thing to say in the world
Is I'm sorry
I'm sorry, yeah
The lyrics to The Maine's song "I'm Sorry" convey remorse and regret for letting someone down. The singer is struggling with their own personal demons and realizing they have hurt someone they care about. The opening lines "I'm fucked up again, I shouldn't drive tonight, but I keep thinking of you" suggest that the singer is struggling with their own vices and addictions while simultaneously trying to maintain a relationship.
The chorus of "I'm sorry, I'm not what you wanted, I'm sorry, I'm sorry I let you down" is a heartfelt apology that is trying to communicate the depth of the singer's remorse. The lyrics "I could use some poor excuse, cause the hardest thing to say, oh it's the hardest thing to say in the world, is I'm sorry" also suggest that the singer is struggling with the words and trying to find the courage to admit their wrongdoing.
Overall, the message of the song is one of self-reflection, self-awareness, and owning up to one's mistakes. It's a universal theme that many people can relate to, while also being specific to the experiences and emotions of the singer.

But both you and I know the way this will end
So I said
Having lost my mental stability, I recollect the times when you gave me a chance to redeem myself. Despite being only human, I acknowledge that you and I both know how this will conclude. So, I spoke
And I could use some poor excuse
'Cause the hardest thing to say
Oh, it's the hardest thing to say in the world
Is I'm sorry
I'm sorry, yeah
I could provide a terrible pretext for my actions, but I understand that telling you I'm sorry is the most challenging thing to do. Nonetheless, I must say, 'I'm sorry'
