Getting Better
The Mama's and the Pappa's Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Once I believed that when love came to me
It would come with rockets, bells and poetry
But with me and you it just started quietly and grew
And believe it or not
Now there's something groovy and good
Bout whatever we got
And it's getting better
Growing stronger warm and wilder
Getting better everyday, better everyday
I don't feel all turned on and starry eyed
I just feel a sweet contentment deep inside
Holding you at night just seems kind of natural and right
And it's not hard to see
That it isn't half of what it's going to turn out to be
Cause it's getting better
Growing stronger, warm and wilder
Getting better everyday, better everyday
And just like a flower that takes time to bloom
This love of ours is taking time to grow
Ba da da da da da da da da da da da
And I don't mind waitin', don't mind waitin'
Cause no matter how long it takes
The two of us know
That it's getting better

Growing stronger, warm and wilder
Getting better everyday, better everyday.

Overall Meaning

The Mamas and the Papas' It's Getting Better is a classic love song that tells a story of a love that has caught the singer off guard. The opening lyrics "Once I believed that when love came to me, It would come with rockets, bells and poetry" encapsulate the expectations the singer had regarding love. As many people tend to believe, love is supposed to be like a fairytale, sweeping people off their feet and making them feel like they're walking on air. However, love for the singer in this song started quietly and grew from there.

As the song progresses, it's evident that the singer has come to realize that love is more than just a feeling--it's an experience. They no longer feel "turned on and starry-eyed," but instead, they feel a "sweet contentment deep inside." This feeling is further amplified when they hold their partner at night--the singer feels a sense of comfort that feels natural and right. The singer also acknowledges that the love they share is a work in progress, just like a flower that takes time to bloom. But no matter how long it takes, they know it's getting better, stronger, warmer, and wilder every day.

Overall, It's Getting Better is a beautiful love song that speaks volumes about how love is an experience that can grow and evolve over time. It highlights the beauty of finding love in unexpected ways, and how sometimes the best things in life happen quietly.

Everytime i hear the Song

California Dreaming
I cry out loud
as a over 50 year old man.

They were the best band in these days-it was a gift.

The Mamas and The Papas have made my childhood with other bands.

Now nearly 80 years old, I can still say I liked everything they sang, but I considered Cass Elliot to be the most talented vocalist of the group. I rank her with Peggy Lee, Linda Rodstat, and Carly Simon. Cass Elliot was a unique vocalist. What a lost when she died.

68 years old here, I agree with you!

@seandobson499

Cass Elliot had a great singing voice, she could have sang the telephone book, and it would have sounded great.

@billh.1940

You sell her short! She was in a category, that includes the best Broadway and opera singers! Her singing made the mama and poppas!

@Frauditor420

Nearly 80? Well done! I'm 42. Hope you go on decades to come and I hope I make 80! And 100% on Cass.

Did he just call the London Palladium the "London PALAH'DEEUM"? What is wrong with this generation?

Cass was the reason this band was so popular. It was her voice that made the songs
