That's How Heartaches Are Made
The Marvelettes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

That's how, that's how heartaches are made
La la la la la la la la

Ooh, they told me I was such a fool to love you
They say that you're the kind who'll never be true
Pretty soon the day would come
When I'd be the sorry one
But I said that I'm not afraid

Oh, that's how, that's how heartaches are made
La la la la la la la la

I went ahead and my heart opened the door
I gave you so much love no one could want more
You pretended to be mine
How could you be so unkind
With all the other girls you played with, yeah

That's how, that's how heartaches are made
La la la la la la la la

That's how, that's how heartaches are made
That's how, that's how heartaches are made

I know you're not sincere and you'll never be
But still I want your kisses so desperately
I could never let you go
Baby even though I know
Every rule of love you disobey

Oh that's how, that's how heartaches are made

La la la la la la la la
Oh that's how, that's how heartaches are made

Overall Meaning

The Marvelettes' "That's How Heartaches Are Made" is a classic tale of unrequited love and heartbreak. The song starts with the realization that the singer has been warned that their love interest is not trustworthy, but chooses to ignore those warnings in the name of love. The chorus repeats the song's title and suggests that this is just the way things are when it comes to matters of the heart.

The second verse shows the singer giving their all to this person they love, only to be met with betrayal and unkindness. This betrayal is emphasized in the line "With all the other girls you played with." Despite this, the singer still pines for the object of their affection, admitting that they "know [they're] not sincere and will never be," but still wants their kisses so desperately. The song ends with a repetition of the chorus and a resigned acceptance that heartache is just the nature of love.

Close my eyes and I can remember being a kid in NYC that's why I just love these Ladies and this song!

Lena Chavez

This version is just as splendid as the original one!.

Beautiful song :)
Great composing :)

Corey Sheppard

This is a fabulous rendition of the original. Between Wanda's amazing vocal and the extraordinary instrumentation that only Motown could provide. The Marvelettes were robbed a hit with this tune.

Armand Alegg

I heard a few Marvelettes tracks in the '60s, notably My Baby Must Be a Magician, which is pretty good. So is this, which I'm hearing for the first time. Perhaps its biggest problem is that the lead instrument in the break was not well-chosen.

However, about a year ago I came across the Baby Washington version. That one is much more than pretty good, it's absolutely sublime.

the marvelletes,so underrated!

Full Blown Cranium

Baby Washington is the bomb, but Wanda Young owns this song. Perfect arrangement too. The Marvelettes never met a cover tune they didn't improve.

I loved the group mostly in their last phase (68-71), when their popularity waned. Their sound is so mellow, the fantastic lead singer Wanda was singing even better than in her younger years.
