Sleep
The Mavis's Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Same thing as before
White crystal sharp ball
Hey he will sleep
Hey he will sleep
Hey he will sleep

Drift down your knives cliff
Your fingers between my teeth

Hey he will sleep
Hey he will sleep
Hey he will sleep

Don't you wanna die
Don't you wanna die
Don't you wanna die in your sleep?

Your knife scares my back
Head on the floor

Hey he will sleep
Hey he will sleep
Hey he will sleep

Don't you wanna die

Don't you wanna die
Don't you wanna die in your sleep?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Sleep" by The Mavis's express a dark and eerie feeling. The repetition of "Hey he will sleep" throughout the song makes it sound almost hypnotic and trance-like. The line "White crystal sharp ball" is a bit cryptic, but it could be referring to a crystal ball or some other kind of object that has a sharp, dangerous edge. The singer seems to be addressing someone directly, urging them to sleep, even though the lyrics also suggest that the same person is using a knife to harm or threaten the singer.

The next lines, "Drift down your knives cliff/Your fingers between my teeth" continue the tension and unsettling tone of the song. The imagery of cliffs and knives is violent and aggressive, while the mention of teeth adds a kind of sexual undertone to the lyrics. It's difficult to tell who is speaking at this point in the song - the person who wants to sleep or the singer who is being threatened or harmed.

The final lines of the song repeat the question "Don't you wanna die in your sleep?" This phrase is repeated three times, which gives it a haunting and memorable quality. Overall, the lyrics to "Sleep" suggest a sense of danger, violence, and despair, as well as a kind of twisted fascination with death and sleep.

I have to laugh, the Mavis's went to my high school. Even after they left, the librarian there (a nice old guy) would put posters up for their gigs on the notice board just outside the library!
