My Melancholy Baby
The Medleys Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You watched your hand hold the pen
And write the note, but it wasn't you
And every single word was wrong
But every word you wrote you knew was true

And as you stepped into the night
You wondered how this ever got so damned confused
And again you cry in the darkness all alone
The bitter taste of the California goodbye

You watch the desert fall away to mountains
And to forest green and rivers blue
An you glance down at your watch and wonder
What he's thinking now that it's already noon

And then you think you'll chance the radio again
Though the last time every song just made you cry
Wo, wo, yes, it did
And as you touch the dial
Another tear falls for the California goodbye

There are dreams that we can keep
And there are stars that shine through space
Though it's cold and deep, dreams that we can keep
Oceans rise and fall and desert winds don't sleep

Tomorrow you'll be home again
A thousand memories down the road from yesterday
And if you're not too late
You might see, baby, brother pack his things and walk away

But somewhere deep inside
You know an aching heart can never run and hide
Ah, then you, you wanna die

As the sun sets fire to the desert sky
A curtain falls on the California goodbye, goodbye

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Medleys's song My Melancholy Baby seem to be about a person going through a difficult time in their life. They are trying to write a note to someone, but it seems that every word they write is wrong. Despite this, the person knows that what they are feeling is true. They step out into the night and wonder how their life got so confused. As they cry in the darkness, they are reminded of the bitter taste of goodbye. Then they watch as the desert falls away to mountains, forests and rivers but they are just constantly thinking about the person they have left behind.

As they travel, they try to listen to the radio but every song just makes them cry even more. There are dreams that we can keep, but there are also stars that shine through space. Even though it may be cold and deep, it's possible to keep dreams alive. Oceans rise and fall, and the desert winds never sleep, reminding the person that life goes on no matter how much they are hurting. Eventually, they will make it back home, but they know that a part of their heart will always ache.

The song portrays the raw emotions of someone going through a painful goodbye. It's relatable and beautifully written, leaving the listener feeling empathetic towards anyone experiencing a similar situation.

Thanks, bc1903, for posting these many clips. They meant so much to my parents while they were separated by my dad's service in WW-II, and again once they were re-united after the war. We kids grew up listening to the wonderful music by G.Miller and the other GREAT BANDS of that time. Thanks again for letting us hear them again!

Jack Northrup

Takes me back to high school dances....Miller played it the way we loved it. Soft and sweet for slow dancing. Took me all the way through WW II.
