Afraid Of The Dark
The Megas Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This training made me ninja
It spreads and kills who I used to be
I am shadow
you are my enemy

Incoming, drawing closer
This darkness can’t help swallow me whole
These shadows hyperactive
Save my soul…

Say goodbye to the Light
The darkness grows
I’m league with the shadow
I can feel the good in me is dying slow
Turning off the sun
Running through the night
I am the knife in a gunfight
Evil left its mark
So tell me -
Are you afraid of the dark?

I feel it taking over
My past is quickly falling away
Battle is what it craves now
Kept at bay

The me that used to be here
Has gone away but I can’t say where
I fear I may have killed him
I’m so scared…

Say goodbye to the Light
The darkness grows
I’m league with the shadow
I can feel the good in me is dying slow
Turning off the sun
Running through the night
I am the knife in a gunfight
Evil left its mark
So tell me -
Are you afraid of the dark?

I feel it tearing me apart
Are you afraid of the dark
I feel the shadow in my heart
Are you afraid of the dark

Say goodbye to the Light
The darkness grows
I’m league with the shadow
I can feel the good in me is dying slow
Turning off the sun
Running through the night
I am the knife in a gunfight
Evil left its mark

So tell me -
Are you afraid of the dark?

Overall Meaning

The Megas's song "Afraid of the Dark" is a powerful portrayal of a person's descent into darkness and the fear that comes along with it. The lyrics paint a picture of a transformation into a ninja-like figure, who is now shadow and enemy to those who were once friends. The darkness is consuming the singer, and they struggle to hold onto their former self, "I fear I may have killed him, I'm so scared."

The internal battle between light and darkness is a central theme in this song. The singer references the importance of the Light, which they have had to say goodbye to, as the darkness grows stronger. They are now in league with the shadow, as the good in them is dying slowly. The knife in a gunfight metaphor is particularly striking, as it represents the singer's vulnerability in this new world of darkness, and their willingness to fight against it.

Overall, "Afraid of the Dark" tells a story of transformation and the fear that comes with it. The lyrics are hauntingly beautiful and the melody complements the story perfectly.

Bad: Shadowman being an alien ninja robot

Good: Wily found an alien robot incredibly damaged of unknown origin and purpose, and gave it an overhaul and dressed it a ninja outfit he picked up from a costume store.

@mikeax24

That's entirely true if you think about it

@flerponius429

Remember: Dr. Wily didn't build Shadow Man, he found him damaged and abandoned on another planet, and repaired and reprogrammed him.

@SleepyReapy32

Non canon

@adnmach

@@SleepyReapy32 he's made from an unknown metal and Dr Light theorizes that he was left by an ancient civilization on another planet in an official post so it's canon.

@SleepyReapy32

@@adnmach There is no "official" post of it, that is a 10 year old website that is buried so underground that capcom clearly doesnt acknowledge it, Shadow Man is simply just a robot master

@adnmach

@@SleepyReapy32 that's just the translation, the original interview was on a Japanese magazine, a lot of the things that Dr Light said in that interview are canon to this day.
Also in Rockman battle & fighters, they also mention that he is an extraterrestrial robot, and that game is canon

@SleepyReapy32

@@adnmach battle and fighters is not a canonical game, the alien shit is just a stretch from the comics and that's all it will be, there is no reason to make him an alien, it doesn't fit nor make sense

This feels like it can be as much a song about Shadow Man losing his past as he is slowly turned into another killing machine by Wily, as much as it can be about Mega Man starting to feel numb from all of the killing, fearing what he has become and questioning the fear of joining the dark side.

I think this is a pretty great song to play before "Walk away from Light".

Playing The Wily Wars recently made me want to come back to The Megas, this album is so nostalgic for me and holds up so well
