April's Fool
The Merrymakers Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Away
She would have stayed
Maybe
If I was colder
I wouldn..t be
One of her old flames
Friends they tried to tell me
I
Was her clown
How she kept me
Hanging on to
Her rollercoaster
Downward bound
She packed in
January
She left in February
It
Took til March to realize
That
I..d been April..s fool
Kisses
She gave me daily
But shyed away
When I wanted more
But given the
Fact she fooled me
It all makes
Sense she..d be out the door
I
Was her jester baby
I should..ve
Played it cool
I only stayed in
Hopes that maybe,
She..d give me
Her heart not her ridicule
She
Packed in January...
(Should
Have listened to your
Mind)
Instead of listening to my
Heart
(Someday you..ll
Learn)
Now I see it..s clear to
Me
That we were better off
Apart
(She went on her way)
(Left her bills to pay)
The lyrics to The Merrymakers' song April's Fool tell the story of a man who was in a relationship with a woman who treated him poorly. He reflects on how he was given daily kisses but was ultimately just her jester and fool. The singer's friends warned him that he was just her clown and that she was leading him on a rollercoaster ride that would lead to heartbreak. However, he didn't listen to their warnings and ultimately was left heartbroken when she left him in April. The song highlights the singer's regrets and his realization that they were better off apart.
The lyrics also touch upon the themes of trust, love, and betrayal. The singer trusted his partner and believed that she would give him her heart, but instead, she gave him ridicule. The song explores the naivete of love and how it can blind one to the warning signs of a relationship that is destined to fail. The chorus, "She packed in January, she left in February, it took 'til March to realize that I'd been April's fool," illustrates this idea perfectly.

Great song. So catchy. Definitely up there with Jellyfish, The Beatles, Beach Boys etc. Sucks that people can't support this kind of music.

The best Beatles song that the Beatles never wrote.

If you want that, try "Please don´t lead me on" by The Sheepdogs. Pure McCartney!

Thanks JoshDone for that comment! :-) Welcome over to the Merrymakers FB page and to mine as well (I'm the humble singer you hear on this record). Desperate to get the "big break" almost twenty years after the release of "April's Fool". I'm tired of not being rich. :-)

Hi David! I'm tired of you not getting what you deserve either - both in recognition and in cold hard cash! I didn't realize that you sang lead on this track, which is one of my favorites. You may have noticed that I'm the guy who keeps begging you to come to New York City or Philadelphia so that I can hear you play, LOL. I love your records, and I learned how to play George's "All Those Years Ago" by watching your video of you playing it. And I too was born in 1970 - I don't know the significance of that..................Be well!

Long story short - I was working at Universal Music in Los Angeles when "Bubblegun" came across my desk, through what channels I do not recall. I threw it in the CD player in my office and fell in love. It is one of my all time favorite recent power pop albums, along with Ok Go's debut album, Sugarbomb's "Bully," and almost everything by The Nines and Richard X. Heyman.
