Mother Earth
The Metropole Orchestra/Within Temptation Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Birds and butterflies
Rivers and mountains she creates
But you'll never know
The next move she'll make
You can try
But it is useless to ask why
Cannot control her
She goes her own way

She rules until the end of time
She gives and she takes
She rules until the end of time
She goes her own way

With every breath
And all the choices that we make
We are only passing through on her way
I find my strength
Believing that your soul lives on
Until the end of time
I'll carry it with me

Once you will know my dear
You don't have to fear
A new beginning always starts at the end

Until the end of time
She goes her own way

Overall Meaning

The song "Mother Earth" by The Metropole Orchestra/Within Temptation is a beautiful tribute to the power and majesty of nature. The lyrics speak to the idea that despite our best efforts, we can never fully understand or control the forces of the natural world. The opening lines of the song describe some of the beautiful things that nature creates - birds, butterflies, rivers, and mountains. However, the song goes on to emphasize that no matter how much we try to understand nature, we can never predict or control what it will do next. Instead, we must learn to accept and respect nature for what it is, and go with the flow of its movements.

The chorus of the song emphasizes the idea that nature will exist "until the end of time" and that we are all only temporary visitors on this planet. Despite the fact that we are only passing through, however, we must still make choices and live our lives as best we can. The singer finds strength in the belief that our souls continue to exist after we die, and that we will carry the memory of those we love with us forever. The song ends on a hopeful note, suggesting that even though everything must eventually come to an end, there is always the possibility of a new beginning waiting for us.

Iconic performance. Mother Earth is the first song I ever heard from WT back in 2003 and I'm hooked since then. And the Black Symphony version of Mother Earth is absolutely breath-taking. Sharon's singing, the band, the orchestra, the choir... the whole staging. Can't get enough of it. Oh, those were the days when WT were captivating.
