sirens
The New Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Hear the sirens, hear the circus so profound
I hear the sirens more and more in this here town
Let me catch my breath to breathe then reach across the bed
Just to know we're safe, I am a grateful woman
The slightest bit of light and I can see you clear
For fear this someday will be over
I pull you close, so much to lose
Knowing that nothing lasts forever
I didn't care, before you were here
I danced in laughter, with the ever after
But all things change, let this remain
Hear the sirens covering distance in the night
The sound echoing closer, will they come for me next time?
For every choice, mistake I made it's not my plan
To send you in the arms of another woman
And if you choose to stay, I'll wait, I'll understand
Oh, it's a fragile thing, this life we lead
If I think too much, I can get over-
Whelmed by the grace, by which we live our lives
With death over our shoulders
Want you to know, that should I go
I always loved you, held you high above too
I studied your face, the fear goes away
It's a fragile thing, this life we lead
If I think too much, I can get over-
Whelmed by the grace, by which we live our lives
With death over our shoulders
Want you to know, that should I go
I always loved you, held you high above too
I studied your face, the fear goes away
The fear goes away, the fear goes away
The fear goes away
The lyrics of The New's song Sirens speak of longing, loss, and the pursuit of love. The first verse describes the arrival of a ship across the restless sea that the singer is waiting for, anticipating the sirens' call. The ship is lost and far away from its intended course, cutting through the breaking waves, and is said to be plowing a lonely trade. We can interpret this as the singer or the singer of the song being lost and looking for direction, for something or someone to guide them to their desired course. This theme is further explored in the second verse, where the singer talks about catching the midnight train and traveling all across the continent to find love, describing the journey as the destination itself.
The chorus of the song, sung twice, reiterates the longing and the mistakes made, leading to loss and the inability to find the way back. It speaks of hurting the loved one, nearly giving everything away, and not knowing where to turn when they're gone. The last segment of the chorus describes the singer's attempts to make things right, admitting their mistakes and apologizing. The song ends with a plea for the loved one to see that they're good for a man like the singer.
Overall, the song's narrative seems to be about searching for direction, making mistakes, and finding one's way back to love.
