Now and Then
The Nigel Purcell Trio Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Now and then
Someone steals your heart
And you don't want it back
It is then your cast adrift and frightened
But things aren't so bad
You hear thing
You don't know her when
You fear things
She's been here and there
Your heart sinks
Your lover had
Made you sing
Now and then
Someone breaks your heart
And you can't be bothered to dream
It is then the emptiness of life
A space where your heart had been
When the mirror cracks
You hear things
You don't know her when
You fear things
She's been here and there
Your heart sinks
Your lover had
Made you sing
Goodbye
The song "Now and then" by The Nigel Purcell Trio explores the theme of heartbreak and its aftermath. The opening lines, "Now and then, someone steals your heart, and you don't want it back," suggest that someone has deeply impacted the singer's emotions, leaving them feeling vulnerable and adrift. However, they find solace in the realization that things aren't as terrible as they initially seemed.
The mention of a cracked mirror symbolizes the shattered image of oneself after experiencing heartbreak. This broken reflection brings about a sense of uncertainty and unfamiliarity. The line, "You don't know her when you fear things," suggests that the heartbreak has not only affected the singer's perception of themselves but also their ability to trust and understand others. The fear mentioned here might stem from the pain they have endured in the past.
The line "She's been here and there, your heart sinks" further emphasizes the emotional impact of this lost love. It implies that the singer's lover was once present in their life but has since moved on, leaving a void that provokes deep sadness. Despite this heartache, it is evident that the person who broke their heart also brought moments of joy and made them sing.
As the song progresses, the singer states, "Now and then, someone breaks your heart, and you can't be bothered to dream." This indicates a sense of numbness, where the heartbreak has rendered the singer emotionally detached, unable to find the motivation to dream or aspire for a better future. The emptiness they experience in life is likened to a physical space where their heart used to reside.
Overall, these lyrics convey the complexity of emotional pain and its lingering effects. The song acknowledges the resilience one can find even in the face of heartbreak. It speaks to the universal experience of having one's heartbroken and the subsequent struggle to heal and move on. Ultimately, the singer bids farewell with the word "goodbye," possibly signaling their acceptance of the situation and their readiness to embark on a new chapter.
