The band released its first LP, 'Wonderworld of Colourful', in 1998. It was followed later that year by a four-song EP. Several songs found frequent airplay in U.S. and Canadian college rock stations. A retooled lineup of the Nines released 'Properties of Sound' in 2001. Its latest work is 'Calling Distance Stations', released in 2006.
You Know
The Nines Lyrics

I had to patch up the cracks and the holes that I have to hide
For a little bit of time even made it work okay
Just long enough to really make it hurt
When they figured me out and it all just rotted away
Don't you fucking know what you are?
Don't you fucking know what you are?
Go on get back to where you belong
You better take a good look 'cause I'm full of shit
With every bit of my heart I've tried to believe in it
You can dress it all up, you can try to pretend
But you can't change anything
You can't change anything
In the end
Don't you fucking know what you are?
Don't you fucking know what you are?
Don't you fucking know what you are?
Go on get back to where you belong
Don't you fucking know what you are?
Remember where you came from, remember what you are
Remember where you came from, remember what you are
Remember where you came from, remember what you are
Remember where you came from, remember what you are
Remember where you came from, remember what you are
Remember where you came from, remember what you are
Remember where you came from, remember what you are
Remember where you came from, remember what you are
Remember where you came from, remember what you are
Don't you fucking know what you are?
Go on get back to where you belong
Don't you fucking know what you are?
Go on get back to where you belong
Don't you fucking know what you are?
Go on get back to where you belong
Don't you fucking know what you are?
Go on get back to where you belong
In the song "You Know" by The Nines, the lyrics describe a sense of deception and the struggle to maintain a façade in order to fit in or be accepted by others. The singer expresses their efforts to conceal their flaws and vulnerabilities, symbolized by the cracks and holes they try to patch up. This imagery reflects the idea of hiding one's true self and putting on a mask to hide imperfections. As the singer navigates this charade, it eventually unravels when they are exposed and everything falls apart.
The repeating refrain of "Don't you fucking know what you are?" serves as a confrontational questioning of self-awareness and authenticity. It challenges the listener, and perhaps the singer themselves, to recognize and acknowledge their true identity and not to deceive themselves. The expletives used emphasize the frustration and urgency in this realization, implying a critical self-examination is necessary.
The lines "You better take a good look 'cause I'm full of shit" reveal the singer's internal struggle with self-doubt and disillusionment. Despite their efforts to believe in something or to dress things up, they ultimately realize the futility in pretending and that genuine change cannot be achieved by superficial actions. This self-awareness leads to a call for acceptance and a return to one's true essence.
The repeated urging to "Remember where you came from, remember what you are" highlights the importance of staying grounded in one's roots and acknowledging their authentic self. It serves as a reminder to embrace one's true identity and not lose sight of who they really are, despite the pressures to conform or hide behind a façade. The song ultimately conveys a message of self-acceptance and the importance of staying true to oneself, urging the listener to confront their true nature and find belonging in their genuine identity.
