The Train
The Nits Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Once on a cold grey morning
I was walking home alone
The traffic light in the falling rain
The unanswered phone
I was so sad and lonely
On a lonesome avenue
So sad and lonely
What could I do
Once I opened a drawer
In a room of a strange hotel

I saw a photograph of you
You looked so sad and lonely
On a lonesome avenue
So sad and lonely
What could I do
Once in a railway station
In the city where I live
The windows were like mirrors

In this train
'Hey, what you're doing with your life'

Overall Meaning

The Nits' song "The Train" tells a story of a person feeling lost and lonely. The lyrics evoke a sense of isolation and sadness, as the person walks alone in the rain, experiences an unanswered phone, and finds a photograph of a sad and lonely person. The song speaks to the existential question of what one can do in such a state of despair. The chorus repeats the phrase "So sad and lonely, what could I do," highlighting the helplessness that the person feels in the face of their emotions.

The song takes on a new tone in the final verse, where the scene shifts to a railway station in the person's city. The windows are compared to mirrors, perhaps suggesting a reflection of the person looking back at themselves. It is here that an unknown voice asks, "Hey, what you're doing with your life," forcing the person to confront the stark reality of their feelings and question their purpose.

Brings tears to my eyes. My parents used to put on the Nits all the time as a kid, it reminds me of the simpler, happier years of childhood.

@mclarsj

This song is as fresh to hear now as it used to be in the 80's! Like tasting good wine ,it only becomes better and richer...As I may say I was a punkrocker in the early 80's, now I'm mature

@Muziekgenot

One of the best Dutch bands ever. International style. Very personal sound. Very VERY underrated, alas!

@tabularasa0606

Correct, they're clearly in the top 5 Dutch bands ever.

@allivegp

This song made me travel from Greece to Blegium bt train, ten years ago.
