I Know a Place
The Nor'easters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

[Verse 1]
I knew
When you told me you don't wanna go home tonight
And you tried to just shrug it off when I asked you why
Somebody hurt you
Somebody hurt you, ooh
And I knew
'Cause I can recall when I was the one in your seat
I still got the scars and they occasionally bleed
'Cause somebody hurt me
Somebody hurt me
But I'm staying alive

[Pre-Chorus]
And I can tell
When you get nervous
You think being yourself
Means being unworthy
And it's hard to love
With a heart that's hurting
But if you want to go out dancing

[Chorus 1]
I know a place
I know a place we can go
Where everyone gonna lay down their weapon
Lay down their weapon
Just give me trust and watch what'll happen
If you lay down your weapon

[Bridge]
Just lay down your weapon (x3)
They will try to make you unhappy
Don't let them
They will try to tell you you're not free
Don't listen
I, I know a place where you don't need protection
Even if it's only in my imagination, I
I know a place we can go
Where everyone gonna lay down their weapon
Lay down their weapon
Just give me trust and anything can happen
'Cause I know
I know a place we can go
Where everyone gonna lay down their weapon
Lay down their weapon
Just give me trust and anything can happen
'Cause I know

[Chorus 2]
I know a place we can go
Where everyone gonna lay down their weapon
Lay down their weapon
Don't you be afraid of love and affection
'Cause I know
I know a place we can go
Where everyone gonna lay down their weapon
Lay down their weapon

Don't you be afraid of love and affection
Just lay down your weapon

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "I Know a Place" by The Nor'easters speak to the experience of dealing with past hurts and finding a safe space to heal and be yourself. The song conveys a sense of empathy and understanding towards someone who has been through emotional pain and encourages them to let go of their defenses and embrace love and affection.

In the first verse, the singer acknowledges that they can see the pain the other person is carrying because they have been through similar experiences in the past. The scars they mention symbolize the emotional wounds they still carry, and the occasional bleeding represents the lasting impact of those hurts. However, despite the pain, they have chosen to stay alive and not let it define them.

In the pre-chorus, the singer highlights the insecurities and self-doubt that can arise as a result of past hurt. They recognize that the person they're speaking to may struggle with feeling unworthy of love and may be afraid to open up. But in the chorus, they offer a solution - a place where everyone can let go of their defenses and find peace. They encourage the person to trust them and see the transformation that can happen when they lay down their emotional weapons.

The bridge emphasizes the importance of not allowing others to bring you down or define your worth. The singer reminds the listener that they know a place where they don't need to protect themselves because love and acceptance exist. Even if it may seem like a figment of imagination, it represents a mindset and a belief in a better world. The repetition of "lay down your weapon" serves as a mantra, urging the listener to let go and embrace the possibility of love and affection.

Overall, "I Know a Place" is a powerful anthem about finding healing, creating safe spaces, and choosing love over fear. It speaks to the universal experiences of pain and the desire for connection and offers hope for a world where people can embrace their vulnerability and be accepted for who they are.

I knew
When you told me you don't wanna go home tonight
And you tried to just shrug it off when I asked you why
Somebody hurt you
Somebody hurt you
But you're here by my side
And I knew
'Cause I can recall when I was the one in your seat
I still got the scars and they occasionally bleed
'Cause somebody hurt me
Somebody hurt me
But I'm staying alive
And I can tell
When you get nervous
You think being yourself means being unworthy
And it's hard to love with a heart that's hurting
But if you want to go out dancing
I know a place (ooh)
I know a place we can go (yeah)
Where everyone gonna lay down their weapon
Lay down their weapon
Just give me trust and watch what'll happen
'Cause I know (ooh)
I know a place we can run (yeah)
Where everyone gonna lay down their weapon
Lay down their weapon
Don't you be afraid of love and affection
Just lay down your weapon
Right now
It's like you're carrying all the weight of your past
I could tell all your bruises, yellow, dark blue, and black
But baby a bruise is, only your body
Tryna keep you intact
So right now
I think we should go get drunk on cheap wine
I think we should hop on the purple line
'Cause maybe our purpose
Is to never give up when we're on the right track
And I can tell
When you get nervous
You think being yourself means being unworthy
And it's hard to love with a heart that's hurting
But if you want to go out dancing
I know a place (ooh)
I know a place we can go (yeah)
Where everyone gonna lay down their weapon
Lay down their weapon
Just give me trust and watch what'll happen
'Cause I know (ooh)
I know a place we can run (yeah)
Where everyone gonna lay down their weapon
Lay down their weapon
Don't you be afraid of love and affection
Just lay down your weapon
(Lay down your weapon)
They will try to make you unhappy
Don't let them
They will try to tell you you're not free
Don't listen
I, I know a place where you don't need protection
Even if it's only in my imagination
I, I know a place we can go
Where everyone gonna lay down their weapon
Lay down their weapon
Just give me trust and anything can happen
'Cause I know (ooh)
I know a place we can go (yeah)
Where everyone gonna lay down their weapon
Lay down their weapon
Just give me trust and watch what'll happen
'Cause I know (ooh)
I know a place we can stay (yeah)
Where everyone gonna lay down their weapon
Lay down their weapon
Don't you be afraid of love and affection
Just lay down your weapon

The soloist sings with such a clear, emotional, beautiful cadence!!! Nor'easters does it again, such a beautiful arrangement.

I will always follow and support this group, and welcome every member change. Because they continue to acknowledge and support such things as this.
After they were featured on a reality show I actually emailed them. In tears I had watched that crew go through losing a member to suicide and I was so appreciative of the way it was handled, if by the members of the group or the producers of the show, it was never presented in a way other than a victim of depression losing his battle. As someone who suffers from severe depression amongst anther mental illness, this was heart breaking yet refreshing. So I sent an email to them with my condolences but also my thanks. I will always have their response saved, and respect them for taking the time to do so. I will always be a Nor’easters fan.

OMG 😱😱 that was amazing!! Great job! Can't believe that was completely acapella. Got a little teary eyed towards the end especially with the speech of Emma Gonzales. Love it! Great cover of a great song!!
