PILLS
The Perishers (SE) Lyrics

Can distract you
I hope my fists
Can fight for two
So it never has to show
And you'll never know
I hope my love
I hope my arms
Can bind you
So you'll never have to see
What we've grown to be
One may think
We're alright
But we need pills
To sleep at night
We need lies
To make it through the day
We're not ok
One may think
We're doing fine
But if I had to lay it on the line
We're losing ground
With every passing day
We're not ok
But that's one thing
I would never
One thing I would never
That's one thing
I would never say to you
The Perishers's song Pills is a heartfelt ballad about a struggling relationship that may seem fine on the surface but is actually held together by lies and pills. The lyrics are sung with a sense of despair and melancholy, as the singer tries to cover up their problems by projecting a false image of happiness and contentment. The opening lines express the hope that their smile and fists will be sufficient to hide their pain from their partner, so they never know the truth of what is going on beneath the surface. They hope that their love can blind and their arms can bind their partner, so they never have to see the reality of their situation and what they've grown to be.
The chorus of the song confesses the truth of their relationship - that they need pills to sleep at night and lies to make it through the day. They project an image of being fine, but the reality is that they're losing ground with every passing day. Despite this, the singer concludes by saying that there is one thing they would never do - say that they're not okay to their partner. This line is a testament to the difficulty of admitting vulnerability and acknowledging the problems in a relationship.
The song's somber tone is further enhanced by Sarah McLachlan's hauntingly beautiful vocals, which add an extra layer of emotional intensity to the lyrics. Overall, Pills is a poignant and powerful exploration of the complexities of relationships and the difficulties inherent in admitting vulnerability and seeking help when things are not going well.

I hope my smile
I want to distract you from what's really going on
Can distract you
by putting on a happy face and pretending everything is alright
I hope my fists
I'm willing to fight for us
Can fight for two
so we don't have to face our problems alone
So it never has to show
I don't want anyone to see how much we're struggling
And you'll never know
I'll do my best to hide it from you
I hope my love
I want our love to be enough
Can blind you
so you don't have to face the reality of our situation
I hope my arms
I want to hold onto you and never let go
Can bind you
so you feel like you have somewhere to turn
So you'll never have to see
I don't want you to know what's really going on
What we've grown to be
because it's not something we're proud of
One may think
We might seem like everything is okay
We're alright
but that's not the case at all
But we need pills
We're struggling to cope with our problems
To sleep at night
and we can't even find rest in our sleep
We need lies
We're constantly telling ourselves things are okay when they're not
To make it through the day
because we can barely handle what's happening
We're not ok
We're struggling more than anyone will ever know
But that's one thing
There's one thing
I would never
that I'd never do
One thing I would never say to you
I'd never admit to you just how bad things have gotten

when love is in the edge to be torn apart what keeps you holding is the pills that makes you sleep while both of you are in silence pretending all is alright but it isn't

This hits really hard personally because I do have a very bad relationship with sleeping pills and no one in my life knows and it's a constant thing I try to hide. This hit hard the first time I heard it. The Perishers are amazing.
