Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Phantom:
Insolent boy
This slave of fashion
Basking in your glory
Ignorant fool
This brave yought suitor
Sharing in my triumph
Christine:
Angel I hear you
Speak, I listen
Stay by my side
Guide me

Angel, my soul
Was weak
Forgive me
Enter at last, master

Phantom:
Flattering child
You shall know me
See why in shadow I hide
Look at your face
In the mirror
I am there inside

Christine:
Angel of music
Guide and guardian
Grant to me your glory

Angel of music
Hide no longer
Come to me
Strange angel

Phantom:
I am your angel of music
Come to me angel of music

I am your angel of music
Come to me angel of music

Overall Meaning

In the song "The Mirror" from the musical "The Phantom of the Opera," the Phantom (played by Gerard Butler) and Christine (played by Emmy Rossum) engage in a powerful and emotional exchange. The Phantom starts by calling Christine an "insolent boy" and a "slave of fashion," highlighting his disdain for her seemingly shallow and ignorant nature. He basks in his own glory and mocks Christine for her lack of understanding. Despite this harsh tone, the Phantom acknowledges Christine as a suitor who shares in his triumph, showing a complex mix of admiration and condescension towards her.

Christine, on the other hand, hears the Phantom's words and earnestly asks for his guidance and presence. She refers to the Phantom as an angel, expressing her willingness to listen and be led by him. She admits her weakness and asks for forgiveness, inviting the Phantom to enter her life as a master or mentor. This shows her vulnerability and longing for support and direction.

The Phantom continues to address Christine, referring to her as a flattering child who will come to know him and understand why he hides in the shadows. He invites her to look at her reflection in the mirror, emphasizing that he is present within her and in her surroundings. This metaphorical reflection symbolizes the Phantom's influence and presence in Christine's life, hinting at a deeper connection between them beyond the surface interactions.

In the final part of the song, both characters refer to the Phantom as the "angel of music," highlighting his role as a guide and guardian for Christine. The Phantom urges Christine to embrace his presence fully and not fear him, offering himself as a mysterious and alluring figure in her life. The repeated plea for the "angel of music" to come to Christine underscores the Phantom's desire to be accepted and understood by her, blurring the lines between mentorship, manipulation, and affection in their complex relationship.

There are dozens of stage performances that were far superior to the travesty that was the movie. The only good part about the movie was Emmy’s “Wishing”

I have a theory, she's not just mesmerized by his singing and paternal voice, I think the "fake fog" is a powerful hallucinogen (how else do chandeliers look like waving arms?)

What do you think?

Gerry is and always will be my #1 Phantom. Some people might think his voice is too loud or forced, but I think that his voice produces a raw texture that the Phantom should have considering he taught himself how to sing. It also sounds really mesmerizing and entrancing, especially for a guy that has never sung before. #TEAMPHANTOM
