The Mirror
The Phantom and Christine Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

In the corner of the mirror I see myself, oh
While I think to myself
How did I get here?
In the corner of the mirror I see myself, yeah yeah
While I think to myself
How did I get here?
Can't deny what I already know
I've identified the way to go home
I won't forgive me, no
I cannot give me another chance, yeah yeah
Feeling the weight of the world, yeah
Feeling the weight
The weight of the world, yeah, yeah yeah
Part of me is very sensible
The other half is really skeptical
Battle between these chemicals
Raging war inside my brain, yeah yeah
Feeling the weight of the world, yeah
Feeling the weight
The weight of the world, yeah, yeah yeah
In the corner of the mirror I see myself, oh
While I think to myself
How did I get here?
In the corner of the mirror I see myself, yeah yeah
While I think to myself
How did I get here?
All I know is someday I will die
I don't wanna be the one whose life went by, no
I won't stand for that, no no
As long as I'm alive
Feeling the weight of the world, yeah
Feeling the weight
The weight of the world, yeah, yeah yeah
I don't know but if there is a God
Please give me everything you've got
I need the strength to do the job
My workshop, I won't stop, yeah yeah
Feeling the weight of the world, yeah
Feeling the weight
The weight of the world, yeah, yeah yeah
All is fine inside my mind
Operating overdrive
All these trivial worries
Someday they will cease to be
In the meantime I will find
Any semblance undefined
Lift this veil underneath
See what's really bothering
In the corner of the mirror I see myself, oh
While I think to myself
How did I get here?
In the corner of the mirror I see myself, yeah yeah

While I think to myself
How did I get here?

Overall Meaning

"The Mirror" is a deeply introspective song that explores the inner turmoil and self-reflection of the character, likely Christine, as she grapples with her current circumstances and emotions. The repetitive imagery of seeing herself in the mirror symbolizes self-examination and contemplation. She questions how she ended up where she is, indicating a sense of confusion and possibly regret in her life choices.

The lyrics also touch upon the internal conflict within her, portrayed as a battle between her sensible and skeptical sides, which may reflect her struggle to reconcile her emotions and rational thoughts. The reference to a "raging war inside my brain" suggests a heightened sense of inner turmoil and confusion, showcasing the complexity of her emotional state.

The song delves into themes of mortality and the passage of time, with the acknowledgment that someday she will die. This acknowledgment serves as a poignant reminder of the fleeting nature of life and the urgency to make the most of the time she has. The plea to God for strength and guidance in carrying out her responsibilities further underscores her vulnerability and need for support in facing life's challenges.

Ultimately, "The Mirror" encapsulates a journey of self-discovery and acceptance, as the character grapples with her internal struggles and strives to overcome them. The lyrics convey a message of resilience and determination in the face of adversity, as she confronts her fears and uncertainties while seeking clarity and understanding in her search for inner peace.

[Phantom's Voice]
Insolent boy!
This slave of fashion
Basking in your glory!
Ignorant fool!
This brave young suitor
Sharing in my triumph!

[Christine]
Angel, I hear you!
Speak I listen...
Stay by my side, guide me
Angel, my soul was weak forgive me...
Enter at last, Master!

[Phantom's Voice]
Flattering child, you shall know me
See why in shadow I hide
Look at your face in the mirror
I am there inside!

[Christine]
Angel of Music!
Guide and guardian
Grant to me your glory
Angel of Music
Hide no longer
Come to me, strange angel...

[Phantom's Voice]
I am your Angel ...of music
Come to me Angel of Music...
I am your Angel ...of music
Come to me Angel of Music...

There are dozens of stage performances that were far superior to the travesty that was the movie. The only good part about the movie was Emmy’s “Wishing”

I have a theory, she's not just mesmerized by his singing and paternal voice, I think the "fake fog" is a powerful hallucinogen (how else do chandeliers look like waving arms?)

What do you think?

Gerry is and always will be my #1 Phantom. Some people might think his voice is too loud or forced, but I think that his voice produces a raw texture that the Phantom should have considering he taught himself how to sing. It also sounds really mesmerizing and entrancing, especially for a guy that has never sung before. #TEAMPHANTOM
