Keep On Your Dress
The Pigeon Detectives Lyrics

Drinking all the time but now your just repeating yourself,
Was that supposed to mean I think you might of made a mistake?
Your eyes appear to be closed but I know that you're still awake.
Keep on your dress girl it's okay (That's not the thing you need now),
That's not what I was going to say (I guess I'll take my leave now),
Keep on your dress girl it's okay (That's not the thing you need now),
Was that supposed to mean oh hear we go you're going to cry?
That used to work on me but this time it is still goodbye,
Was that supposed to mean you're making no sense?
Drinking all the time but now you're just repeating yourself.
Keep on your dress girl it's okay (That's not the thing you need now),
That's not what I was going to say (I guess I'll take my leave now),
Keep on your dress girl it's okay (That's not the thing you need now),
Cause that's not what I was going to say (I guess I'll take my leave now).
I think it's time that we were going now don't you?
Leave with some dignity please darling won't you?
I think it's time that we were going now don't you?
Leave with some dignity please darling won't you?
Just Keep on your dress girl it's okay (That's not the thing you need now),
That's not what I was going to say (I guess I'll take my leave now),
Keep on your dress girl it's okay (That's not the thing you need now),
Cause that's not what I was going to say (I guess I'll take my leave now)
The Pigeon Detectivesβ song βKeep On Your Dressβ is a breakup song about a couple who are having trouble communicating effectively. The song describes the frustration of one partner with the other, who is drinking heavily and repeating themselves. The singer questions whether the other person is making any sense and insinuates that theyβve made a mistake, possibly referring to the breakdown of their relationship. Despite this, the singer seems to care for their partner, telling them to βkeep on your dressβ and saying that itβs okay.
The repeated line βthatβs not the thing you need nowβ may refer to the idea that the partner is searching for affirmation or comfort, but the singer realizes that what they really need is acceptance and understanding. When the singer says, βI think itβs time that we were going now,β they are acknowledging that itβs time for the relationship to end, but asking the other person to leave with dignity. Ultimately, the song is about the complicated emotions that come with the end of a relationship and the desire to handle it in a way thatβs respectful to both parties.
