City Kids
The Pink Fairies Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Nobody knows,
I know nobody cares what goes on in here,
We have this door,
Nobody gets in until I'm really sure,
Don't creep up behind me,
You know where to find me I'm always around,
Turns out if you need us, before you lead us astray
Don't care who we meet,
We're orphans here on Easy Street and we feel real mean,
Cruising on speed,
We've got more than we'll ever need, ain't life sweet?
We won't turn your pay down,
City kids don't lay down, we don't call so,
Better get some more of that,
City kids we don't give that to you, oh no

Bombs go off at night,
Searing heat, blinding light, you like it fine,
Park the car and run,
Dance all night, it was for fun, we're nasty, hahahaha!
Why do we do it,
No-one can get through it we know where to run,
You hear what we're saying,
Time that you were praying 'cos,
City kids time, won't be long,

Won't be long, no it won't be long!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Pink Fairies' song City Kids are an ode to the rebellious youth culture thriving on the streets of the city. The singer highlights how nobody knows or cares what goes on in their world, and the only ones who get in are those who they are sure won't lead them astray. This sense of exclusivity and self-reliance is reinforced by their status as orphans of Easy Street, cruising on speed and feeling real mean. They are reckless and daring, with bombs going off at night, and searing heat and blinding light as their playground. They enjoy their freedom and take pleasure in causing havoc, as evidenced by their defiant laughter.

The City Kids are an embodiment of the unapologetic and unfettered nature of youth, who know what they want and take it without any inhibitions. They don't care who they meet or what they do, as long as they have more than they'll ever need. Throughout the song, the underlying sentiment is that of the impending confrontation between the establishment and the youth, as the City Kids are constantly prepping for it, and it's only a matter of time before it happens. The lyrics evoke a sense of nostalgia for a time when the youth culture was a counterculture, with its unique set of values and beliefs, which have since been lost to the ravages of time.

Who needs New York Dolls or the Sex Pistols, this is the indigenous blue print for UK Punk and Metal. Wallis made a significant contribution to rock music in the UK.

52 years old listening to Motorhead and now I'm just finding these guys got some good rock and roll to live too now wherever these guys been on my life

@zebj16

Pink Fairies were initially based in Ladbroke Grove London, as we're Hawkwind. Hawkwind had a base guitarist called Lemmy who song/wrote a Hawkwind song called Motorhead. If I remember, he got busted for, surprise, surprise, speed (why do I think of Citizens Smith...), and left the band to form his own band called Motorhead

Great Tune! RIP Larry Wallis thanks for all your influences, during the 'punk' era, and your work with Stiff Records, and of course your early work with Motorhead! dx

@bluedeathheavyblues

Larry Wallis still pulls off one of the greatest rock n roll guitar solos of all time.

@lonnieburcham7294

6 years later Nick Hankey still pulls off one of the greatest rock n roll quotes of all time

@Glantoniain

Hugely undetrated guitar smith.

@NewZealandWild

This is what I'd call an early example of British punk, no doubt inspired by the MC5
