Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song “Knock on Wood” by The Ramblers Dance Band express the singer’s reluctance to lose the good thing he has. He is not superstitious, but he can’t take any chances of losing the love he has. He wishes the person well because their love feels better than any love he knows. The way the person loves him is frightening, like thunder and lightning. He made a knock on wood to signify his hope that their love would last. He finds it hard to reach the woman he loves, but just one touch from her and he knows it feels so much. He urges the listener to knock on wood to ensure good luck in their love life.

The lyrics are simple and repetitive, with a focus on the importance of luck in love. The use of the metaphor of knocking on wood is interesting as it is a common superstition believed to bring good luck. The repetition of the line “Knock knock knock on wood” only emphasizes this idea. The reference to thunder and lightning is also interesting as it implies the intensity and passion of the love being sung about. Overall, the song seems to be about the importance of holding onto a good thing and hoping for it to last.

One of my favourite tracks by the Ramblers band. I grew up in one of the Nigeria Police barracks, as a growing up boy, in 1970. There was one very young Constable Police man, next to us who plays this track 24/7 and we the children decided to nickname him, "KNOCK ON WOOD"

My Dad owned this Ramblers record back in the 70's and we learnt our dance moves and playing styles from them, such beautiful memories.
