I'm Always Chasing Rainbows
The Rat Pack Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm always chasing rainbows
Watching clouds drifting by
My schemes are just like all my dreams
Ending in the sky
Some fellows look and find the sunshine
I always look and find the rain
Some fellows make a winning sometimes
I never even make a gain
Believe me, I'm always chasing rainbows
Waiting to find a little bluebird in vain

I'm always chasing rainbows
Watching clouds drifting by
My schemes are just like all my dreams
Ending in the sky
Some fellows look and find the sunshine
I always look and find the rain
Some fellows make a winning sometimes

I never even make a gain
Believe me, I'm always chasing rainbows

Overall Meaning

The Rat Pack's "I'm Always Chasing Rainbows" is a melancholic song about the pursuit of happiness and the struggles to achieve one's dreams. The lyrics use rainbows as a metaphor for happiness, with the singer always chasing them but never truly finding what he's looking for. He's constantly dreaming up schemes to achieve his goals, but they all seem to end up like his dreams - unreachable and ending in the sky.

The singer contrasts himself with other "fellows" who are able to find happiness and success, but he always finds himself falling short. He never gains anything from his efforts, and the bluebird of happiness continues to elude him. The song speaks to the universal struggle of trying to find happiness and meaning in life, reflecting on the difficulty of achieving these goals.

@penel100

These are two consumate artists who work together perfectly. I had forgotten how wonderfully Sammy Davis could deliver a song. Laurindo Almeida I could never forget.

@bennyjazzful

WOW Wonderful version by Sammy & Laurindo. Can't get much better than this.

@BreakCards

This is my favorite version of this music. The first time I heard, the last part made me cry and this version make me think about my life. I think this lyric was written for me. Specially the part of dreams... The first time, I heard this version I have a fight with my parents... Of corse with this version I cry... It's true is no coincidences...

@EdWaldrup

Have you noticed that some of the most elegant music is with a small simple production. This is a case in point. Beautifully performed. Two other examples are Doris Day and Andre Previn on Duet and Tony Bennett and Bill Evans on Together Again. All are spectacular. Misty is from this Sammy Davis album. These are all must haves.
