Here
The Rebels Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Take your lonesome soul
To the place I hear
Where your freedom comes
And nobody cares
Lead your woes away
They're only here
If you stay down here
Down here they say
There's a game to play
There's a place to go
Where you learn how to pray
No one seems to care
But they'll give you
A stare down here

They're gonna steal your breathe
So give it away
They're gonna steal your mind
So give it away
They're gonna steal your soul

So give it away
Down here

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of The RebelS's song "Here" speak to the experience of seeking solace and freedom in a place where one can escape the burdens of the world. The opening lines, "Take your lonesome soul / To the place I hear / Where your freedom comes / And nobody cares," suggest a longing for a space where one can find peace and release from the troubles that weigh them down. It hints at a sanctuary where one can find liberation and independence without judgment or interference from others.

The lyrics further emphasize the idea of leaving behind one's troubles and worries in order to find respite, with the encouragement to "Lead your woes away / They're only here / If you stay down here." This can be interpreted as a call to let go of negative emotions and burdens that may be holding one back, and to seek out a place of freedom and clarity. It suggests that one's troubles only have power if they are allowed to remain, urging the listener to break free from the constraints that bind them.

The following lines paint a contrasting picture of the place that is being left behind, where there is a sense of emptiness and indifference towards individual struggles. The mention of a "game to play" and a place to learn how to pray could symbolize conformity and superficiality, where people may go through the motions without truly caring or understanding the depth of their actions. The reference to receiving stares but not genuine concern implies a lack of authentic connection or empathy in this environment, highlighting the stark difference between this place and the sanctuary being sought.

The closing lines of the lyrics shift to a more ominous tone, warning of the potential for one's very essence to be taken away if they remain in this stifling atmosphere. The repetition of the phrase "They're gonna steal your..." followed by the directive to "give it away" suggests a surrender or sacrifice of one's most vital parts in order to survive in this oppressive space. This could be a powerful metaphor for the cost of staying in a place that suppresses individuality and depletes one's spirit, underscoring the importance of breaking free and reclaiming one's autonomy and selfhood.

Cut, cut, cut, tell me somethin'
You can play a bass
You can play a drum
Everybody shake your stuff
The Rebel's here
Get up, the MC has started
Pump up the house and groove it
Stop, you're in a shakedown zone
You like bass, I love it to the bone
Hustle, I got muscle
Time to rock 'cause the rhythm is trouble
Dance, let's go crazy
When you see me, shout "Rebel MC"
Outlaw kicking up dust
You know what it is, I'm just street tuff
Everybody shake your stuff
The Rebel's here and he's street tuff
Everybody shake your stuff
The Rebel's here
"Just keep rockin'" was the last chant
I'm back, brand new round the mike stand
On stage I make it look easy
I'm the Rebel so run, come follow me
Hard not soft, underground boss
Turn up the bass and the treble of course
Feel with the music and you wonder
Is he a Yankee? No, I'm a Londoner
Tell yo mate I'm droppin' it rough
You know what it is, I'm just street tuff
Everybody shake your stuff
The Rebel's here and he's street tuff
Everybody shake your stuff
The Rebel's here
Elementary like A, B, C
Easy as one, two, three
Yes, it's the Rebel MC
Rough like a ninja, stinging like a bee
Back by public demand
You're now rockin' with a one man band
Go with the flow, moves you know
Jam the nightclub, rock the disco
Funky music, I can't get enough
Know what it is, I'm just street tuff
Everybody shake your stuff
The Rebel's here and he's street tuff
Everybody shake your stuff
The Rebel's here
Rhythm gets me hype
Let me take you on a journey, a musical flight
I'm a hustler, know how to deal
Not fake 'cause I'm so real
Get down to the brand new mix down
Stand firm, Double Trouble in the background
For the white, black and the light brown
Dash the old style, this is the new sound
Wheel
You know what it is, I'm just street tuff
Everybody shake your stuff
The Rebel's here and he's street tuff
Everybody shake your stuff
The Rebel's here

I'm 60. I recently played this at a gig, some people my age were there, but there were a lot of youngsters in their 30s who had never heard this track. The place was rocked to its foundations when I put this on. Pure music.

The transition from American accent to his London accent just before he says "is he a Yankee? No, I'm a Londoner" is genius, because we were all thinking it the first time we heard this classic

@HUNKY06

This music absolutely destroys todays dull stuff. Happy feel good music. 80s & 90s the best, club scene amazing.

@SuperKendoc

Where did it all go wrong'😢😢

@Scripture-Man

@@SuperKendoc I'd say it all went wrong in 2011. I loved all the music up until 2010, and there was so much great music in 2010. But then it seemed to take a nosedive in 2011 and I've hated the last 10 years of music!
