On the weekends you would never call me
Raving about those things that you love so
In the morning I woke from dreaming
About the things of you I'd never know
Honey I know we tried so hard
You're in Cali and I'm in your city
And I don't want to walk these streets alone
Can't you imagine the sounds of the city
Wisping by while you whisper in my ear
You'll say sweetly should have never left me
And that's all I want to hear
Yeah that's all I want to hear
The lyrics to The Rosebuds' song "I Hear" explore themes of longing, distance, and the desire for connection. The singer reflects on their relationship, particularly the lack of communication and the yearning to be close to their loved one.
The song begins with the singer expressing disappointment in their partner's lack of communication. They mention that on the weekends, their partner never calls them, choosing instead to rave about things they love. This implies a disconnection and suggests that their partner may be more focused on their own interests rather than nurturing the relationship. The singer wakes up from a dream, realizing that there are things about their partner that they will never know.
The chorus conveys the singer's deep yearning to be together with their loved one. They acknowledge the efforts they have both made in the relationship, but emphasize that they only have one hope left. The distance between them becomes apparent as they mention themselves being in different locations - their partner in California and they themselves in the partner's city. The singer confesses that they do not want to walk the streets alone, emphasizing their longing for companionship and the fear of facing the world without their loved one.
The second verse builds on this theme of longing and connection. The singer imagines being together in the city, with the sounds of the city serving as the backdrop while their partner whispers sweetly in their ear. The line "You'll say sweetly should have never left me" suggests regret and a longing for the relationship to be reconciled. The chorus is repeated, emphasizing that the only thing the singer wants to hear is their loved one's sweet words, expressing their regret for the distance and their desire to be together.
Overall, the lyrics of "I Hear" convey a profound sense of longing and the desire for connection. The singer desires communication and closeness with their loved one, expressing the fear of being alone and yearning for their partner's affectionate words.
