The Sea & I were formed by Irwin Sparkes and Paul Frith. They release their debut 6-track EP on July 15th 2013. The EP was produced by Paul and Irwin, and mixed by Ian Grimble (Seasick Steve, Alessi’s Ark, The Staves).
The Sea & I are an ever changing phalanx of musicians, forming around the central core of Bernie, Naomi, Paul and Irwin, augmented with anything from brass, to strings to choirs depending on availability, venue size and the mood of the moment.
The Sea & I do not play gigs in the usual sense, they simply reinterpret songs they’ve recorded according to where they are and who they have with them. Their last performance was in St. Leonard’s Church in East London, and featured a 50-piece choir. Their next show will be at London’s Old St Pancras Church and will feature a brass band and the London Contemporary Voices Choir. Not to be missed.
All four musicians have been in other bands before, and found the idea of simply forming another circuit touring outfit uninspiring – hence the unusual venues, fluctuating line-ups and ever-changing instrumentation. Not to mention the onboard lighting designer who transforms the spaces the band play in.
In one of those chance meetings so beloved of rock biographers (although aren’t all meetings chance meetings? Really? When you think about it?) Irwin & Paul got talking in a New York bar, discovered they were neighbours back in London and were both looking for love of the musical kind…
In the words of Irwin Sparkes they “Found common ground and built a bloody great house on it.”
