There are 2 key issues causing the complaints, but they should make sense to anyone who has played 'Skyrim'
1. The main questline is pretty short and repetitive. There are a handful of faction quests (eg Ryujin, SysDef/CF) that are pretty good. You really need to do the Companion Quests, and the "Radiant" quests and encounters for you to find in the world. There seems to be hundreds of those - I'm multiple playthroughs deep and I'm still finding new ones.

2. The game has an aggressive Fast Travel system, and using it can cause you to miss those Radiant quests.
You can complete a Ryujin espionage mission (like hacking CeltCorp) and fast travel straight back to the Lodge. This misses Neon City, Neon Spaceport, Volii space, Alpha Centauri space, Jemison Spaceport, and the Jemison Mast District.

It's easy to fall into a loop of "travel, mission, travel to reward, repeat" and be done with the game in a few hours. But that's essentially speed-running. You can also choose to 100% Scan every planet you land on, explore any points of interest, and do every side mission you find - and you'll have enough content to keep you busy for even longer than a Skyrim playthrough.

The New Game+ feature is also unique, because it's not just a reset of the game. Things change on each playthrough, and I am convinced that some of the Radiant Quests are mutually exclusive in the playthroughs (eg. Some playthroughs have the chance to meet Grandma, others don't)

I can’t believe the devs made dialogue for this- but they did! I went to the New Homestead Doctor and got the alien spacesuit. I kept it and went to the Constant colony ship and put it on. Then I went aboard the ship for First Contact to scare them!!! Hilarious! The guards had dialogues about the costume. So funny and a bit evil! (make sure to turn off the hide suit options for full affect)

I also enjoy making all the constellation characters wear ridiculous clothing everywhere (Sarah Morgan as a neon dancer, or Andreja as a UC Security guard). Makes me giggle. “Well don’t stock up on junk!” Is a little less annoying when Sarah is dressed as an alien stripper.

I'm pretty sure there is a group of colonists who does turn out to be cannibals and you can find contraband organs on them eventually. I can't remember where they are as they were the only main side thing I didn't find after an almost 180 hour playthrough.

There is a dialogue option to tell Ikande you can't do it. Ikande says something like, "I know you've made relationships, and it'll be hard, but we need you."

These people are supposed to be thieves and killers who only do things for personal gain. If they get their hands on the money from the Legacy, they'll terrorize the galaxy. Why would there be any remorse?

The thing about the Filburn quest is that there isn't actually any observable hunger problem in the universe. Not even in the most run-down areas like Ebbside or the Well, or in the most remote settlements you can find. Even that begging girl in the underbelly has enough food, and tells you that in dialogue. OK you can view that as Bethesda not putting in the work to make this a recurring concern elsewhere, but if you take things as you see them, there is no "hunger problem" to solve.

I mean, it's true that Todd Howard can sometimes oversell his games and they tend to be obnoxious sometimes, but they always deliver quality stuff. I would rather blame the global game making industry with the standards they just force on every release in the end, but still, from all the informations I gathered, it still seems the release was a bit too early and so many things needed more polishing... You don't have to kill the grandmother to get those resources. All you have to do is go to her car all day and her Captain's locker and you can take it off for free, it won't even be stealing either she'll just give it to you, in the dialogue he says you can take whatever you need. I gave her a$9,000 credits so I took everything she had in her locker and cargo besides food, i use stims cuz the food is bogus in this game

I would say most people don't think that you can't do evil shit.
They are annoyed by the fact that almost all the companions are boyscouts who will throw a tantrum as soon as you rob someone.
From Skyrim to Fallout 4, now to Starfield this basically got worse and worse and now people feel like they aren't allowed to do anything anymore to not piss off their companions.

Saying that you can play with Vasco if you want to be evil is like saying you can play with Dogmeat if you want to be evil in Fallout 4.
Not even the games themselves treat them as "actual" companions since they don't count against the "lone wanderer" or the "introvert" perk.
Sure Skyrim had no meaningful companions whatsoever, but I think its a big disappointment that the companion diversity is so weak.

1. I made the colonists basically slaves to Paradiso, because everyone on the ship just kept telling me "We don't want trouble, we will kill you if we have to"... Bit*h, I'm here trying to help you and you threaten me?! Enjoy working off a 100 year debt to a corporation mf.
2. No, that's just wrong... I love my grandmother, so I never even thought of doing that to grandma. Had a chat, offered her help, undocked and went on my way.
3. Taking Sona with you is only natural and logical. She is a valuable future asset to Constellation. She'd be one helluva captain when she grows up.

Except you can never be anything close to Satan incarnate in this game, because just about every named NPC is essential. The game doesn't even let you kill Mathis, a pirate who tells you he will kill you the next time he sees you, until the game says you can because it's in a quest. Also, Benjamin Bayou, who is probably the most Satan-esque character in the game, cannot be touched. Again, he threatens to kill you during a quest. If you try to shoot him, the bullets literally go straight through him and don't even register. It's shambolic.

I did destroy that colony vesell on Porima only because all of their crew were massive twats. They had first contact with another human outside of their group in 200 years and all they were telling me was that they will kill me on every occasion they had. I'd understand one warning on first conversation, but threatening me every step I made following their captain was to much for me to respect. I'm to starborn to deal with this pretentious shit.
But being all serious, narrative in this game leave a lot to desire, not that older Bethesda games were well written but this one is exceptionaly bad and crassy. It would be nice if another game in this universe was made by Obsidian, just like they did make New Vegas on Fallout 3 engine.

Spoiler Alert:

There's a mission where someone on a space station wants Velocity from Neon but has no idea what it is. I smuggled some Aurora off hoping the game would give me the option of give her Aurora and telling her it was Velocity... nope. For me the most disappointing thing with Starfield is the linear morality track. You've always had the choice of being good, neutral, or evil in Bathesda games... but not here. Sure, you can do evil things but the game goes out of it's way to punish you for it. I'm convinced Microsoft made them tone it down.

In fallout2, you could sell off your bride to slave traitors 😂🤣. In fallout1, you could take out anyone to include the kids 😳. Black Isle Studios had a dark sense of humor and gave true freedom to explore and play as you chose. Too bad they are no longer around.

This game still falls way behind Fallout 4 and Fallout 3, where enemies cursed at you, you could be a slave trader, and where dialog options weren't either PG13 or twirl-moustache type of evil. And you have no options to straight up agree with Vae Victus, or other perspectives. But I guess having Spacers or Ecliptic searching for you while yelling "It's only a matter of time, BirthingPersonPenetrator!" doesn't really roll off the tongue. 😉

Ya. How about using the same cheat codes as Skyrim. No controversy. Hit ~ Then type TGM. Now you have GOD MODE. Unlimited ammo, health and your ship cannot be destroyed in combat. look up Skyrim cheats. It's the same game engine, like all the other Todd Howard games. $70 to build spaceships ? LoL
